No. 2 Field Hockey Downs Salve Regina for Sixth Straight Win, 6-1

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Junior Camille Marsh (Englewood, Colo.) scored twice and graduate students Brianne McGrath (Newmarket, Ontario) and Sinead Walsh (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) tallied a goal and an assist each as No. 2 Babson College defeated Salve Regina University, 6-1, Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action at MacDowell Field.

With the outcome, the Beavers posted their sixth straight victory and improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the NEWMAC while the Seahawks fell to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Junior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) and sophomore Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) also scored for the Beavers. Junior goalie Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made three saves in 54 minutes in the victory.

Senior Shannon Kennedy (Royersford, Pa.) scored the lone goal to break up the shutout for the Seahawks, with an assist from classmate Ashley Lefebvre (Westford, Mass.). Junior Bryn Protheroe (Glastonbury, Conn.) made some outstanding stops in the Salve goal and went on to finish with a career-high 18 saves and junior Izzy Mastino (Fairfield, Conn.) made a pair of defensive saves in the setback.

The Beavers took control of the game with three goals in the opening frame. Evans started the scoring barrage less than two minutes in, taking a pass just past the midfield stripe, racing past a defender and into the circle before blasting a shot from the right side into the far left corner of the goal.

Marsh doubled the Babson lead in the ninth minute when she dribbled to her left into the circle and unleashed a long reverse shot into the right corner of the goal. McGrath made it 3-0 two minutes later with a similar play, grabbing a loose ball and going right to left in the circle before putting a reverse shot through traffic into the right corner.

The Seahawks managed to keep the hosts at bay in the second frame, thanks to seven saves by Protheroe and a defensive save by Mastino. The Green and White had a 21-3 margin in shots and an 8-1 advantage in penalty corners in the opening 30 minutes.

Babson put the game out of reach with two goals in the first two minutes of the third quarter and three in the first five minutes. Walsh opened the scoring in the second half just 41 seconds in, dribbling through a couple of defenders down the right side before flipping a shot past Protheroe. Just 33 seconds later Walsh sent a pass from the right side into the front of the goal, where DiGiovanni finished off the play for a 5-0 Beaver lead.

The Green and White finished off their scoring in the 35th minute when McGrath intercepted a Salve pass and fed Marsh near the top of the circle and Marsh blasted a shot just inside the left post for her second of the game and team-leading 12th goal of the season.

The Seahawks put a goal on the scoreboard with 10 minutes remaining in the game on a penalty corner. Lefebvre inserted the ball on the corner to Kennedy at the top of the circle and she ripped a shot past Furmanek into the left side of the goal.

Babson finished with a 37-6 shot advantage (26-4 in shots on goal) and had a 12-3 margin in penalty corners.

The Beavers are right back in action on Sunday with a non-conference encounter against Saint Joseph's of Maine at 1 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Salve Regina plays again on Wednesday at Dean College at 3 p.m.
