BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College scored twice in the opening 14 minutes of the match and defeated the visiting Coast Guard Academy, 2-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With its third straight win, Babson improves to 4-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in league play. Coast Guard has dropped seven consecutive games to slip to 1-7-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the NEWMAC.
Graduate student
Morgan Krauss (Belmont, Mass.) and sophomore I
zzy DeMatos (Holmdel, N.J.) both scored for the Beavers. Senior
Catherine Shaw (Norwell, Mass.) recorded an assist and first-year goalkeeper
Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) made three saves to post her third consecutive shutout.
Junior Emily Scharnitzky (Charleston, S.C.) finished with 16 saves for the Bears.
Krauss got the Green and White on the board less than two minutes into the contest when she split a pair of defenders just outside the box on the right wing and beat Scharnitzky with a shot inside the near post for her team-leading third goal of the year. The Beavers doubled their advantage in the 14th minute as DeMatos ran onto Shaw's service from the left wing and one-timed a shot inside the right post from just inside the penalty spot for her first marker of the fall.
Coast Guard nearly cut its deficit in half in the 55th minute as a cross by sophomore Teal Wasson (Kahuku, Hawaii) skipped through the box to senior Chase Merrick (Tallahassee, Fla.), who cut back and rifled a shot that went off the left post and was cleared out of danger.
Babson finished with a 31-8 advantage in shots, which includes a 21-2 bulge over the first 45 minutes, and attempted nine of the 10 corner kicks in the match.
The Beavers are off until next Saturday when they host Wellesley at 1 p.m., while Coast Guard takes on Trinity on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
