Women's Soccer Settles for 2-2 Draw with Wellesley

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Cassie Lawson (Davie, Fla.) and junior Jordyn Ferrantino (Millis, Mass.) scored first-half goals as Babson College played to a 2-2 draw with visiting Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Babson, which is unbeaten over its last four matches, is now 4-2-2 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play, while Wellesley moves its record to 2-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the NEWMAC.

Graduate student Morgan Krauss (Belmont, Mass.) and juniors Laura Lukowicz (Coventry, R.I.) and Elisa Diletizia (Canton, Mass.) each recorded an assist for the Beavers. First-year Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) and junior Nora Ryan (Abington, Mass.) combined for five saves on the day.

Sophomore Elina Saab-Sunden (Stockholm, Sweden) finished with a goal and an assist and senior Paige Sangston (Greenwich, Conn.) notched her first marker of the year for the Blue. Sophomore Riley McNair (Cupertino, Calif.) made eight second-half saves in relief of classmate Sasha Fleesler (New York, N.Y.), who turned away three shots over the opening 45 minutes.

Lawson put the Green and White in front just 6:02 into the match when she touched home with a left-footed volley by Ferrantino off a long free kick by Lukowicz for her second goal of the year. She completed her brace to give the Beavers 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute with an easy finish after Krauss' service from the right wing skipped through the box and past Fleesler.

Wellesley cut its deficit in half in the 30th minute on Sangston's tally. Cottone made a diving save to deny Saab-Sunden but Sangston was all alone in front of goal to put away the rebound. The Blue missed a golden opportunity to pull even just before halftime as Saab-Sunden missed wide right after Cottone made a diving save going to her left to push away McNair's shot from the top of the box.

Saab-Sunden atoned for her miss in the 63rd minute when she ran onto a pass behind the defense from first-year Dika KC (Houghton, Mich.) and sent her first touch into the upper left corner for her team-leading third goal. Babson dominated the final 20-plus minutes of the match but was unable to find a game-winner. Senior Natalie Knauf's (Point Pleasant, N.J.) 20-yd free kick sailed high in the 86th minute and McNair tipped first-year Caroline Sutherland's (Millville, Mass.) effort from 30 yards over the crossbar with under 30 seconds remaining to keep the game deadlocked.

The Beavers finished with a 19-11 edge in shots and attempted five of the seven corner kicks in the game.

Babson returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Bowdoin for a 2 p.m. match, while Wellesley hosts Mount Holyoke on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
