Morgan Krauss (Belmont, Mass.) scored a first-half goal for Babson College and the Beavers went on to a 1-1 draw against Johnson & Wales University in the women's soccer season opener for both schools Friday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
The tie marks the third different result between the two schools in the season opener after Wildcats won the 2021 debut, 2-1, and the Beavers took last year's opener, 3-1. Johnson and Wales finished with an 18-10 advantage in shots, including a 12-3 margin in the second half, and the hosts had an 8-3 lead in corner kicks.
First-year
Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) made an impressive collegiate debut for Babson and made 10 saves in goal, while juniors Leah Bragaw (Vienna, Va.) and Carly McCrumb (Grandville, Mich.) combined for five saves in the Wildcat goal.
Krauss put the Beavers on the board in the 14th minute after creating a turnover deep in Wildcat territory and blasting a shot just inside the right post from the short side to break a scoreless tie. That turned out to be the only goal of the opening 45 minutes.
With JWU applying pressure on the second half, the Wildcats tallied the equalizer in the 63rd minute on a corner kick. First-year Jessica Lee (Newton, Mass.) served the ball from the right corner and senior Madison Sanborn (Wilbraham, Mass.) converted a header from far post to deadlock the score at 1-1.
The Wildcats had the best opportunity to break the deadlock, but Lee rang a free kick off the right post to keep the game tied at one.
The Beavers return home for their home opener on Tuesday against Brandeis at 4 p.m. at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
