Women’s Soccer Drops Home Opener to Brandeis, 3-1

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J.) and first-year Lacey Mbugua (Brockton, Mass.) combined for three goals and one assist as Brandeis University spoiled the home opener for the Babson College women's soccer team with a 3-1 verdict over the Beavers Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With the loss, Babson drops to 0-1-1 on the young season while Brandeis remains undefeated at 2-0-1.

Junior Jordyn Ferrantino (Millis, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season for the Beavers and graduate student Morgan Krauss (Belmont, Mass.) recorded an assist. First-year Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) went the distance in goal and finished with four saves.

Ngoma tallied a pair of goals and Mbugua added a goal and an assist to spark the Judges' offense. Junior Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla.) recorded five saves to earn the win in goal.

The Beavers got on the board first with a goal in the 15th minute when Krauss sent a cross from the right side and Ferrantino converted from the doorstep, redirecting the ball past Bassan for an early Babson lead.

Brandeis tied the score in the 27th minute when Cottone couldn't corral a loose ball near the top of the right side of the box, and Mbugua capitalized, pushing the ball past Cottone and depositing it into the empty net. Babson finished with a 6-4 advantage in shots in the opening frame but the team went into the break tied at one.

The Judges pulled ahead less than three minutes into the second half when Ngoma collected a loose ball just above the top of the box and rifled a shot just inside the left post for her first goal of the game. The visitors made it a two-goal advantage in the 77th minute when Mbugua sent a pass from the left side to Ngoma streaking into the middle and Ngoma tapped in a left-footed shot.

The Judges finished with a 5-2 advantage in shots in the second half and a 9-8 margin for the game. Each team took five corner kicks.

The Beavers will play in the Manchester Women's College Cup this weekend in Manchester, Vermont, facing St. Lawrence Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and Williams Sunday at 3 p.m. Brandeis is back in action Friday at Roger Williams at 4 p.m.
