BEVERLY, Mass.— Graduate student
Meara Hanyon (Brodheadsville, Pa.) tallied a goal and an assist as Babson College scored twice in the first and third quarters on the way to a 4-0 victory over Endicott College in the field hockey season opener for both schools Friday afternoon at North Field.
The Beavers won their third straight season debut to start the campaign at 1-0, while the Gulls are off to an 0-1 start to the year.
Graduate students
Brianne McGrath (Newmarket, Ontario) and
Sinead Walsh (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) and junior
Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) also scored for the Beavers and grad student
Daniela Parrado-Nazal (Santiago, Chile) picked up an assist. Junior
Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) needed to make just one save for her ninth career shutout.
Gulls' sophomore goalie Alexis DeMattia (Methuen, Mass.) shined despite the loss with a career-high-tying eight-save effort in 35 minutes of action.
The Beavers jumped on the board in the 10th minute of the game when Hanyon converted a penalty stroke for the team's first goal of the season. McGrath doubled the Babson lead four minutes later when she picked up a loose ball at the top of the circle and beat a defender before burying her first goal of the year for a 2-0 lead.
The Green and White continued pressuring the Endicott goal and settled for a 2-0 lead at halftime despite a 20-2 shot advantage over the opening 30 minutes. Walsh needed just 66 seconds at the beginning of the third quarter to extend the margin to 3-0. Sharrow rounded out the scoring on a goal off a penalty corner, taking a pass from Hanyon and notching her first score of the season in the 39th minute.
Babson finished with a 36-6 advantage on shots and a 20-5 lead in penalty corners.
The Green and White are back in action on Tuesday with a visit to Connecticut College for a 6 p.m. non-conference encounter.
