Women's Lacrosse Sinks Coast Guard in Key NEWMAC Affair, 19-8

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Graduate student Emily Curtis (Walpole, Mass.), senior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) and sophomore Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) combined for 10 goals and six assists as Babson College cruised to a 19-8 victory over the Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action at MacDowell Field.

With the win, Babson won for the fifth time in its last six games to improve to 9-7 overall and 7-1 in the NEWMAC while Coast Guard had a two-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 10-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

Curtis tallied three goals and three assists, Jayne contributed four goals and one helper and Evans was good for three goals and two assists for the Beavers. Senior Anna Katherine Sypniewski (Vero Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) notched two goals and an assist, and senior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) and junior Nicole Darveau (Sudbury, Mass.) added two goals each in the victory.

Sophomore Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) scored once and collected a career-high 20 draw controls, junior Eileen Manning (Needham, Mass.) scooped up a team-high five ground balls and sophomore goalie Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made four saves between the pipes.

Sophomore Caitlyn Coates (Hanover, Pa.) led the Bears with three goals while senior Gianna Cascio (Hunterdon County. N.J.) scored twice and caused three turnovers and senior Brenda Anderson (Naperville, Ill.) collected three assists. First-year Abby McAllister (Pleasantville, N.Y.) tallied a goal and an assist and juniors Addy Bass (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Sarah Skurat (Marlboro, N.J.) scored once each. Junior Devon McCue (Annapolis, Md.) made seven saves in 45 minutes of action in goal and sophomore Maici Mintchwarner (Cream Ridge, N.J.) made one save in 15 minutes off the bench.

After the teams traded two goals each in the first five minutes of the game, Babson took control with seven consecutive goals to take a 9-2 lead. Curtis had two goals and an assist in the flurry and Sypniewski also had a goal and an assist. Skurat broke the string with a goal for Coast Guard before Sypniewski added a late goal to make it a 10-3 lead for the Beavers after one quarter.

After 10 scoreless minutes in the second quarter, McAllister put one in for Coast Guard with 4:53 on the clock, but Babson ran off four unanswered goals to close the half, with Evans tallying a goal and an assist and Jayne, Dodge and Darveau scoring once each.

The Beavers blew the game open with five answered goals in the third quarter as Evans, Jayne and Curtis all connected on a goal and an assist each and Blake and Connolly adding one each to close out the Babson scoring. Coast Guard tacked on four goals in the fourth quarter of running time, including three by Coates.

Babson finished with a 29-12 margin in shots and won 25 of the 30 draws. The Beavers were successful on all 13 clear attempts while holding the Bears to 14-of-19.

Both teams play their final regular season game on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. with NEWMAC contests as Babson travels to Smith and Coast Guard visits Springfield.

• Babson is 9-0 all-time against Coast Guard in a series that dates back to 2015.
• The Green and White are 47-5 in regular season games against NEWMAC opponents since the start of 2016.
• Seniors Dodge, Sypniewski, Jayne and Maeve Williams (Hingham, Mass.) and graduate student Curtis were recognized prior to the game on Senior Day. The group has led the Beavers to a pair of NEWMAC Tournament final appearances and the 2021 conference championship.
