Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Ryan Kenney (Hingham, Mass.) matched his season high with six goals, senior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) added five goals and one assist and Babson College ran off 10 unanswered goals in the second quarter on the way to defeating Wheaton College, 25-8, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With the win, the Beavers remained undefeated in conference play at 5-0 and improved to 9-4 overall while Wheaton lost for the fifth time in six games and completes its season at 6-10 overall and 0-6 in NEWMAC games.
The Green and White finished with a season-high 25 goals and 13 different Beavers found the back of the net. Graduate student Will Spangenberg (Dover, Mass.) tallied two goals and three assists, junior Christian Brofft (Potstown, Pa.) added two goals and an assist, senior Nick Solomon (Glencoe, Ill.) chipped in with two goals and first-year Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) produced a goal and three assists. Also getting into the scoring act were seniors Wills Jordan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and Dan Neill (Black Earth, Wis.), sophomores Max Mallett (Alexandria, Va.), Matt Park (Waltham, Mass.) and Emmett Martin (Milton, Mass.) and first-years Jack Feeks (Georgetown, Mass.) and Tommy French (Rumson, N.J.) with one goal each.
Junior Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won 19-of-24 faceoffs and scooped up a career-high 16 ground balls. Senior goalie Will Parducci (Manhattan Beach, Calif) made nine saves in the first three quarters and three reserve goalies combined to make four saves in the fourth stanza.
Sophomore Charlie Racine (Oradell, N.J.) led the Lyons with two goals, one assist and 10 ground balls, and senior Shane Ross (Hanson, Mass.) and sophomores Mike McLaughlin (Stoughton, Mass.) and Jack Board (Westborough, Mass.) scored twice each. Junior Jacob Wharton (Worcester, Mass.) caused three turnovers and picked up five ground balls and sophomore goalie John Drew (North Andover, Mass.) made 14 save in goal in the setback.
Babson led 3-2 midway through first quarter before Kenney, Price and Brofft scored for the Beavers in the final four minutes of the frame to extend the lead to 6-2. Board cut the margin to three goals to start the second quarter, but Babson took over, connecting on 10 goals in less than 10 minutes before Ross scored for Wheaton to close out the half. Martin and Brofft started the rally, Price had three goals and an assist in the streak, including a man-up goal, while Spangenberg had two goals and two assists, Kenney scored twice and Feeks added one.
After Kenney and Ross traded goals in the first four minutes of the second half, Babson held Wheaton off the scoreboard the rest of the quarter while Smith, Neill and Kenney tallied goals in a two-minute span and Solomon went back-to-back to close out the frame with the hosts up 22-5.
The Beavers removed all the seniors and graduate students together in a Senior Day salute to start the fourth quarter, and after Wheaton scored three goals, the Babson underclassmen closed out the scoring with three more to secure the win.
The Green and White dominated the faceoff X, winning 25-of-25, while outshooting the visitors 59-25, and winning the ground ball battle, 52-29. Babson was good on 18-of-20 clear attempts while Wheaton was successful on 21-of-27.
Babson wraps up the regular season next Saturday 1 p.m. at MacDowell Field in a showdown with defending champion MIT, with the top seed in the conference tournament on the line.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers have captured 14 victories in the last 15 meetings against Wheaton and is now 29-9 all-time against the Lyons in a series that dates back to 1992.
• Spangenberg increased his season total to 68 points (39-29), which is tied for third on Babson's all-time single-season scoring list with Alex Patinkin '13 (32-36-68).
• Price now has 47 goals this season, which ranks second on the Babson single-season list behind Josh Shaffer, who scored 71 goals in 1995. Price also became the ninth player in program history to score 100 career goals, pushing his career total up to 104.
• Sunderland (106 ground balls, 161-286 face-offs) is in the top five on Babson's single season lists for ground balls and face-off wins. He is also second all-time with 266 career ground balls dating back to 1998 and second in face-offs won (438) going back to 2008.
