Women's Lacrosse Overpowers Clark for NEWMAC Win, 25-0

WORCESTER, Mass.—Graduate student Emily Curtis (Walpole, Mass.) tallied four goals and one assist, and 16 different players put at least one mark in the scoring column as Babson College overpowered Clark University, 25-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Granger Field.

With the win, Babson won its second game in a row to up its record to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference while Clark lost its second straight and dipped to 3-5 overall and 0-3 in NEWMAC play.

First-year Lilly Bedard (Jupiter, Fla.) contributed four points on two goals and two assists for the Beavers. Senior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) and sophomore Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) finished with two goals and one assist each, and junior Nicole Darveau (Sudbury, Mass.), sophomore Nora Lema (Duxbury, Mass.) and first-year Maria Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.) scored two goals each in the victory.

Sophomore Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) collected a career-high 15 draw controls, Curtis scooped up a team-high six ground balls and caused three turnovers, and sophomore Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) needed to make just one save to record the shutout.

Junior Mary Greene (Leeds, Mass.) caused three turnovers for the Cougars, and senior Maddie Conners (Devon, Pa.) made eight saves in goal and collected four ground balls in the first half in the setback.

After senior Anna Katherine Sypniewski (Vero Beach, Fla.) opened the scoring less than two minutes after the opening whistle, Dodge and Novitch scored less than a minute apart to put the Beavers up 3-0 midway through the first quarter. Senior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) extended the margin and Curtis went back-to-back to double the advantage to 6-0, and Darveau followed with two more as the lead ballooned to 8-0 after the first stanza.

Dodge and Lema notched the first two goals of the second quarter before sophomore Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) fired in a free-position shot to make it 11-0 with nine minutes remaining in the half. Connolly, Novitch and Curtis rounded out the scoring in the second quarter to five the Green and White a 14-0 lead at the break.

The Beavers tacked on five goals in the third frame and six more in the fourth as 25 players on the roster saw playing time. Included in the barrage were the first goals of the season for senior Maeve Williams (Hingham, Mass.) and sophomores Kylie McCarthy (Danvers, Mass.) and Michaela Downer (North Andover, Mass.).

Babson outshot Clark 40-3, won the draw control battle 23-5, and scooped up more ground balls by a 21-11 count. The Beavers were good on all seven clear attempts while holding the Cougars to just five clears on 19 attempts.

After three straight road games, the Green and White return home to host No. 17 Williams on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Clark plays a non-conference encounter Wednesday at Fitchburg State at 4 p.m.

• Babson is now 3-0 against Clark in the all-time series that started in 2021, outscoring the Cougars 61-2.
• The Beavers posted their first shutout since an 18-0 verdict over Mount Holyoke on April 9, 2022.
• The 25 goals matches the program record set in a 25-4 victory over Emerson on April 20, 2019, and is the largest margin of victory in program history.
• The Green and White are 52-8 against conference opponents dating back to 2016.
