Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn.—Babson College sophomore goalkeeper Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made a career-high 14 saves before 10th-ranked Wesleyan University closed the game with seven consecutive goals to pull away for a 15-5 win over the Beavers in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Smith Field.
Babson drops to 0-3 on the year with the loss while Wesleyan improves to 2-0 overall.
Graduate student Emily Curtis (Walpole, Mass.) finished with three goals, two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while senior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) scored twice to lead the Beavers. Murphy turned away six shots in the third quarter and denied four free-position shots on the night.
Senior Olivia Lai (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and junior Laura Baine (Rye, N.Y.) both had four goals and one assist, while senior Chessy Greenwald (Scarsdale, N.Y.) scored twice and led all players with three assists for the Cardinals. Senior Kendall Mittleman (East Islip, N.Y.) also had two goals, junior Julia Noyes (Lexington, Mass.) contributed five ground balls and three caused turnovers and graduate student Abby Wolk (Parkland, Fla.) made two saves in the victory.
Up 2-1 nearly seven minutes into the contest, Wesleyan rattled off five straight goals to seize control of the game. Mittleman tallied twice late in the first to make it 5-1, Baine scored 93 seconds into the second and senior Kate Balicki (Wayland, Mass.) followed with a free-position strike at the 9:54 mark to push the margin to 7-1.
The Green and White responded with back-to-back goals by Dodge, and Curtis capped the three-goal run with her second of the night to cut the deficit to 7-4 with 2:02 to go before halftime. Curtis answered Lai's tally to keep the Beavers within 8-5 midway through the third before the Cardinals pulled away.
Lai made it 9-5 with a free-position marker with 6:03 left in the third and notched her fourth goal of the night following another free-position score by senior Gil Horst (Pomfret, Conn.) to extend the margin to 11-5 with 13:08 to go in the fourth. Baine scored the first of two straight goals 39 seconds later, first-year Bridget Horst (Pomfret, Conn.) converted a free-position chance with 3:44 left and Greenwald tacked on her second tally of the night less than a minute later for the final margin.
The Green and White was outshot 38-15 and finished 1-for-6 on free-position chances. The Cardinals finished with a 20-8 edge in ground balls and scored on 5-of-13 free-position opportunities.
Babson returns to action next Monday when it takes on Rhodes at 5 p.m. on the campus of St. Leo University in Florida. Wesleyan travels to sixth-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at 12 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 6-12 all-time against Wesleyan and have dropped eight straight games in the series since 2015.
• Senior Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) extended her points streak to 32 games with a third-quarter assist. Classmate Anna Katherine Sypniewski (Vero Beach, Fla.) also had an assist for Babson.
• After being held scoreless in her Babson debut, Curtis has six goals over the last two games on a total of just seven shots.
