Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) scored a career-high six goals and graduate student Will Spangenberg (Dover, Mass.) added four goals and two assists for six points as Babson College rolled to a 24-11 win over visiting Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With its fourth straight win, Babson improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play while Clark slips to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.
Graduate student Ryan Kenney (Hingham, Mass.) and senior Matt Stucchi (Rexford, N.Y.) both scored three times, juniors Christian Brofft (Pottstown, Pa.) and Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.) chipped in with two goals apiece and first-year Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) had a goal and led all players with three assists for the Beavers. Junior Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won 18-of-25 face-offs and scooped up a season-high 11 ground balls, while senior Hayden Bean (Winchester, Mass.) forced three turnovers. Senior Will Parducci (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) made five saves in 49 minutes of action in the victory.
Graduate student Benjamin Hollerbach (West Hartford, Conn.) had four goals, junior Patrick Liddy (Sutton, Mass.) scored twice and classmate Colin Howard (Cincinnati, Ohio) added a goal and two assists to pace the Cougars. Graduate student Mark Zito (Lincoln, R.I.) collected nine ground balls and won 14-of-33 face-offs, while graduate student Ryan Mickelson (Mattawan, Mich.) stopped 14 shots in the loss.
Smith set up goals by Kenney and Price to give the Green and White a 2-0 lead less than 90 seconds into the contest and Stucchi provided a goal and an assist around a tally by Brofft to extend the lead to 5-0 with 7:16 to go in the first. Goals by Hollerbach and Howard 51 seconds apart cut the Clark deficit to 6-2 but Price answered with three straight markers to push the Beavers' advantage back to 8-2 just over a minute into the second.
The Cougars put together a three-goal run to pull within 8-5 on Josh Collins' (Alexandria, Va.) first tally of the year with 8:02 to go before halftime only to see Babson score seven unanswered goals to end the stanza. Stucchi completed his hat trick with a pair of markers and Spangenberg had a goal and an assist during the run as six different players scored to push the margin to 15-5 at the break.
Price scored twice and Spangenberg contributed a goal and an assist to help the Green and White build a 19-5 advantage with 3:06 to go in the third. Hollerbach scored twice late in the frame but Babson responded by tallying three of the first four markers of the fourth, which included sophomore Matt Park's (Waltham, Mass.) first career goal and classmate Max Mallett's (Alexandria, Va.) first of the season to take its largest lead of the afternoon at 24-8 with 6:17 remaining in the game.
The Beavers outshot Clark 72-30, finished with a 44-23 edge in ground balls and won committed just six turnovers in the victory.
Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to 19th-ranked Bowdoin at 7 p.m., while Clark hosts Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• Babson is now 24-3 against Clark going back to 1994 and has won three straight games in the series.
• The Beavers' 24 goals are the most they've scored in program history against the Cougars and the margin of victory (13) is the largest in the series since 2013 when the Green and White beat Clark 21-7.
• Spangenberg has tallied at least six points in four of Babson's first six games and Price has now finished with five or more goals in three outings this spring.
• The Beavers' six turnovers are their fewest since committing nine in a 13-8 NEWMAC Tournament semifinal win over Clark on May 1, 2021.
