BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Emily Curtis (Walpole, Mass.) tallied seven points on five goals and two assists and senior Anna Katherine Sypniewski (Vero Beach, Fla.) added a season-high four goals to help Babson College to a 16-6 victory over rival Springfield College Saturday afternoon in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse opener for both schools at MacDowell Field.

With the victory, Babson captured its second straight win to improve to 2-3 overall (1-0 NEWMAC) while Springfield dropped its third consecutive game and dipped to 1-4 overall (0-1 NEWMAC).

Senior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) notched two goals and one assist to go along with three draw controls and two ground balls for the Beavers, and classmate Erin Jayne (Merrimac, Mass.) contributed a goal and two assists along with a team-high four ground balls. Junior Nicole Darveau (Sudbury, Mass.) added a goal and two assists, and sophomores Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.), Clare Connolly (Hanover, Mass.) and Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) chipped in with one goal apiece.

Connolly also grabbed a six-high six draw controls and sophomore goalie Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) caused three turnovers and made nine saves in the victory.

Graduate student Jade O'Connor (Baltimore, Md.) led the Pride with three goals and one assist, junior Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.), sophomore Lauren Ronai (Orange, Conn.) and first-year Sarah Newton (Colchester, Conn.) scored once each, and senior Arielle Johnson (Woodstock, Conn.) collected two assists. Babson came out strong and scored the first four goals of the game, including two by Sypniewski and one each from Curtis and Connolly. After Springfield called timeout, the Pride came alive and O'Connor scored the next two goals to cut the margin in half, but Dodge answered for the Beavers to stop any momentum by the visitors.

Springfield tallied the last goal of the first quarter and the first of the second frame to pull to within a goal, but the Beavers scored five unanswered goals in the remaining 14 minutes of the quarter to turn a 5-4 lead into a 10-4 advantage at the break. Curtis had two goals and Jayne, Novitch and Sypniewski one each in the surge.

Dodge opened the scoring for Babson in the first minute of the third quarter and Roy matched that goal on a free position goal with five minutes to go in the third, breaking a 25-minute scoring drought. The Beavers closed out the third quarter with three straight goals by Darveau, Sypniewski and Curtis, and Curtis added another to start the fourth quarter as the Beavers opened up a double-digit lead, 15-5. Ronai for Springfield and Blake for Babson rounded out the scoring.

The Green and White finished with a 32-18 advantage in shots, a 22-16 margin in ground balls and 17-9 lead in draw controls.

Babson is home again next Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. matchup against NEWMAC foe MIT. Springfield returns home to host Endicott Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a non-conference affair.
