Game Preview: Men's Lacrosse at Western New England

SERIES HISTORY
• Babson is 12-14 all-time against Western New England in a series that dates back to 1987.
• Saturday's meeting will be the first since 2007, when the Golden Bears won for the 10th game in a row in the series.
• The two teams are former rivals when they were both playing in the Pilgrim Lacrosse League, which turned into the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) in 2014.

LAST MEETING
• Adam Cherry '07 scored three goals and had an assist as No. 3 Western New England posted an 11-1 victory over visiting Babson on April 25, 2007 in a Pilgrim League contest to remain undefeated with a 13-0 record.
• Babson took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Matt Harrington '09 at the 5:51 mark of the opening period. Goalie Max Owen '09 stopped 11 shots in three quarters of action for the Beavers who fell to 6-6 overall.
• The Golden Bears came back to take a 2-1 lead after one and 5-1 at halftime before breaking the game open by scoring five times in the third stanza. Bryan Cofrin '08 and Tim Heffernan '07 scored twice each for the winners.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
• Babson (2-1, 0-0 NEWMAC) is coming off a 17-10 victory over Trinity on Wednesday night for its second win in three outings at MacDowell Field to start the season.
• Graduate students Ryan Kenney (6g, 1a) and Will Spangenberg (2g, 6a) and senior Chi Chi Price (4g, 1a) combined for 12 goals and eight assists in the win. Junior Topher Bower tallied two goals and an assist, junior Jacob Tauss and seniors Wills Jordan and Jack Garrity scored once each, and Spangenberg scooped up a team-high six ground balls. First-year Will Reading won 16 of 23 faceoffs, and senior goalie Will Parducci made 13 saves in goal in the victory.
• Spangenberg (9-11-20) is ranked seventh in Division III in assists per game and 14th in points per game. Price (10-1-11) leads the team in goals with Kenney (9-1-10) right behind and Tauss (2-5-7) is second on the team in assists.
• Senior Hayden Bean has a team-high three caused turnovers and juniors Brendan Maher and Dillon Quinn have two each. Parducci has an 11.04 goals against average and a 52.2 save percentage.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
• Western New England (1-2, 0-0 CCC) looks to rebound from a 25-14 loss at MIT last Sunday. The Golden Bears opened the season with a 23-12 victory over Keene State before a 9-5 loss to Coast Guard.
• Three Golden Bears posted four points in a loss at MIT, sophomore Jack Houlden (3-1-4), senior Dylan Hanley (2-2-4), and graduate student Mike Bannon (0-4-4). First-year Chris Catuosco won 8-of-15 faceoffs and scooped up seven ground balls and sophomore Jonathon Salsbury made 14 saves in goal.
• Hanley (6-10-16) leads the team in scoring while Houlden (10-2-12) tops the squad in goals. Senior Sean Farland has won 27-of-55 faceoffs and scooped up 22 ground balls. Senior Brian Madden, junior Alex Henry and sophomore TJ Dalicandro have four caused turnovers each and Salsbury (16.42 GAA, 48.9 sv. pct.) has played all three games in goal for the Golden Bears.
• Western New England finished 15-6 a year ago after winning the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship and advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

BABSON VS. THE NESCAC
• Babson's win over Trinity was the third victory in the last four seasons over a program from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) after defeating Bates in 2020 and 2022.
• The Beavers will also face Bowdoin on March 28, Williams on April 8 and Middlebury on April 16.

BEAVER BITES
• Spangenberg's 20 points is the most for a Babson player through three games since Alex Patinkin '13 had 19 points (13-6-19) in 2013.
• Price (10), Spangenberg (9) and Kenney (9) have accounted for 28 of Babson's 38 goals (73.7 percent).
• Ten different players have scored goals for the Beavers this season, and 14 players have posted at least one point.

NUMBERS TO KNOW
• The Beavers are 9-4 since last year and 16-4 over the last four seasons when scoring at least 10 goals.
• Babson is 25-3 when allowing eight goals or fewer going back to the start of 2018.
• The Beavers are 15-1 over the last four seasons when leading at halftime.
• The Green and White are 8-2 over the past two years when recording eight or more caused turnovers.

UP NEXT
• The Beavers will open their 2023 NEWMAC slate next Saturday, March 18, with a visit to Coast Guard for a 1 p.m. matchup.
