Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.— Sophomore Lily Schwartzman (Kennebunk, Maine) converted feeds from junior Gabriella Modesti (Syracuse, N.Y.) into goals with 16 seconds left in regular to tie the game and again with 1:43 remaining in the second overtime as Skidmore College rallied to an 11-10 victory over Babson College in the women's lacrosse season opener for both schools at MacDowell Field.
Babson starts its season 0-1 and Skidmore opens up at 1-0.
Senior Claudia Dodge (Pelham, N.Y.) led the Beavers with four goals and lit up the stat sheet with three caused turnovers, two ground ball and two draw controls. Sophomore Amelia Novitch (Dover, Mass.) added two goals, an assist and three ground balls and junior Nicole Darveau (Sudbury, Mass.) pumped in two goals.
Sophomores Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) and Kathryn Blake (Medfield, Mass.) also scored for the Beavers, and Evans collected a team-high eight draw controls. Junior Zoë Michaud (Bedford, N.H.) caused four turnovers and scooped up two ground balls and classmate Eileen Manning (Needham, Mass.) finished with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Sophomore goalie Kathleen Murphy (Scarborough, Maine) made 11 saves in goal in the setback, matching the second-most in a game in her career.
Schwartzman finished with three goals and three caused turnovers for the Thoroughbreds and Modesti chalked up two goals and four assists. Junior Mandy Marr (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) contributed two goals and two assists, and senior Phoebe Beshlian (Wilton, Conn.) made 10 saves in goal in the win.
After each team scored twice in the first quarter, Babson outscored the visitors 6-1 in the second quarter to open up a 8-3 lead at halftime. Novitch had two goals and an assists in the quarter for the Beavers and Darveau, Dodge, Blake and Evans all scored once.
After Babson opened the third quarter with a goal by Dodge to go up 9-3, Skidmore came alive and ran off six consecutive goals over the next 18-plus minutes, tying the score with 9:46 to go in the fourth quarter. Defenses tightened and neither team was able to score until Dodge fired home a free position shot with 2:37 remaining, but Skidmore sent the game into overtime on Schwartzman's goals with 0:16 on the clock.
Both teams had solid chances in the 10 minutes of overtime play before Schwartzman secured the win for the visitors in the second extra frame.
Babson had slight advantages in shots (35-31), ground balls (24-10) and draw controls (16-12) and won 16 of the 28 draws. The Beavers were good on 17-of-19 clear attempts and caused seven failed clears.
The Beavers are back in action next Sunday, March 5, with a visit to defending national champion Middlebury. Skidmore returns home for its first home game on March 4 against Eastern Connecticut.
