Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) matched his career high with five goals and graduate student Will Spangenberg (Dover, Mass.) tallied once and led all players with four assists to help Babson College defeat visiting Roger Williams University, 12-10, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday at MacDowell Field.

Babson (1-0) won its season opener for the seventh consecutive season, while Roger Williams starts the year at 0-1.

Graduate student Ryan Kenney (Hingham, Mass.) scored twice, junior Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.) had a goal and two assists and classmate Topher Bower (Chicago, Ill.) finished with three helpers for the Beavers. Fellow junior Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won 17-of-26 face-offs and led all players with eight ground balls, while Spangenberg and Brendan Maher (Melrose, Mass.) each had two caused turnovers. Senior Will Parducci (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) finished with six saves in his first career start.

Senior Jordan Pivarnik (Trumbull, Conn.) and sophomore Ryan Venditti (Farmington, Conn.) both scooped up four ground balls, junior Tyler Zanini (Hopkinton, Mass.) caused two turnovers and sophomore Max Kimmel (Milford, Conn.) was tremendous between the pipes stopping 23 shots in a losing effort.

The Green and White got early goals from junior Ford Carney (Garden City, N.Y.), Price and Kenney to build a 3-0 lead midway through the opening quarter. Roger Williams pulled within 4-2 on a tally by Murphy at the 4:23 mark but Price scored twice in the span of 69 seconds and Spangenberg followed with his first goal of the season to extend the Beavers' advantage to 7-2 with 13:23 to go in the second.

Bower set up a pair of tallies by Price over the final seven minutes of the stanza and first-year Bennett Smith (Lake Oswego, Ore.) notched his first career marker as Babson matched its largest lead of the afternoon at 10-5 with 11:15 remaining in the third quarter. Fellow rookie Jack Feeks (Georgetown, Mass.) put away a feed from Spangenberg with 3:32 left in the period but the Hawks answered with goals by Halpin and sophomore AJ DaRin (Manlius, N.Y.) just 37 seconds apart to cut their deficit to 11-8 going to the fourth.

Kenney stretched the margin back to 12-8 with his second goal of the day 90 seconds into the fourth quarter, but tallies by Halpin and graduate student Pat Barboza (Stamford, Conn.) pulled the visitors within two with 3:24 to play. Parducci came up with back-to-back saves after Roger Williams won the ensuing face-off and the Green and White forced a turnover while a man down with under two minutes left to help secure the victory.

The Beavers, who scored twice in five man-up chances, outshot the Hawks 55-27 and finished with a 37-25 edge in ground balls.

Babson returns to action next Sunday when it hosts defending Division III runner-up Union at 12 p.m., while Roger Williams travels to Lasell next Saturday at 1 p.m.
