WORCESTER, Mass.—The Babson College men's and women's swimming & diving teams combined for six top-five finishes and moved up one spot to finish fifth overall at the Gompei Invitational hosted by WPI on Sunday night.
The Beavers totaled 1,024 points on Sunday and 3,025.50 in the three-day meet, which features combined men's and women's scoring. Division I Bryant took first place with 8,051.50 points, the host Engineers were second with 5,551 points and Springfield (3,611.50) and Division II Bentley (3,490.50) came in third and fourth, respectively.
A number of Babson's top men's performances on Sunday came in the 100-yard individual medley as it claimed five of the top eight spots after six swimmers qualified for the A final. Sophomore
Zackary Cheung (Monterey Park, Calif.) touched the wall first with a season-best time of 51.92 and senior
Nathan Ford (Charlotte, N.C.) placed fourth with a season-best time of 52.73, while the senior trio of
Blake Albanese (Middletown, N.Y.),
Joshua Sellers (Fair Oaks, Calif.) and
Joshua Kim (La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.) were separated by less than a half-second in sixth through eighth position. Additionally, first-year
Chase Stevens (Suffield, Conn.) posted a season-best time of 55.27 in the prelims and finished 10th A final.
The Beavers other first-place finish on Sunday came in the 1-meter diving event where first-year
David Krol (Grafton, Wis.) recorded an 11-dive score of 453.20.
Ford came in third in the A final of the 100 free with a season-best time of 46.82, while junior
Matthew D'Elia (Old Bridge, N.J.) placed sixth in the A final of the 200 butterfly in a time of 1:57.58 that was just 0.06 seconds off his best of the season in the prelims. Kim and senior
Shogo Kamei (Tokyo, Japan) both qualified for the A final of the 50 breaststroke and were separated by just 0.03 seconds in the final as Kim took seventh place in a season-best time of 27.47, while Kamei was eighth with his best time of the year (27.50).
Junior
Pat Anutarasoti (Bangkok, Thailand) was the runner-up in the B final of the 100 free with a season-best time of 47.13, senior
Oak Kornsri (Bangkok, Thailand) finished fourth in the B final of the 50 breaststroke with his top time of the season (29.20) and sophomore
Terry Li (Los Angeles, Calif.) came in fourth in the B final of the 200 back with a season-best time of 2:02.62. Classmate
Hawken Hammen (East Lyme, Conn.) also won the C final of the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 2:03.17.
The quartet of Kim, Albanese, Anutarasoti and Ford concluded the meet by placing fourth with a time of 3:09.20 in the 400 free relay.
The top two finishes of the day for the Babson women were recorded by sophomore
Sophia Sznewajs (Edina, Minn.) and junior
Emily Tran (Longmeadow, Mass.) in the 100 IM. Sznewajs came in fifth in the A final with a season-best time of 1:02.80, while Tran finished 10th in a time of 1:04.10 after qualifying with her top time of the season (1:03.67) in the prelims.
Sznewajs also finished 4th in the B final of the 200 back in a season-best time of 54.03, and senior
April Kupsky (Bear Creek, Pa.) qualified for a pair of B finals, placing third in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:12.87 and 10th in the 200 back after touching the wall in 2:13.42. Sophomore
Jenny Chung (Cumming, Ga.) recorded a season-best time of 1:06.25 to finish seventh in the B final of the 100 IM, while classmate
Julia Ahn (Fullerton, Calif.) and senior
Christina Sung (Sharon, Mass.) came in eighth and ninth respectively, with their top times of the year in the 50 breaststroke. Ahn touched the wall in 3626 and Sung was right behind her in 37.86.
Ahn also finished seventh in the C final of the 100 IM with a season-best mark of 1:11.28, while senior
Sophia Swain (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) was third in the C final of the 200 butterfly with a season-best time of 2:17.28. First-year
Nicolette Newsome (Bridgewater, N.J.) was eighth in the C final of the 200 back and senior
Vera Belfonti (Orange, Conn.) came in ninth in the C final of the 200 butterfly.
Babson will break for final exams and the holidays before returning to action on January 13 against Wheaton and Connecticut College in Norton, Mass.
