WORCESTER, Mass. —The Babson College men's and women's swimming & diving teams combined for 870.5 points and sit in sixth place after the opening day of competition at WPI's Gompei Invitational inside the Sports and Recreation Center.
The Beavers are just 52.5 points behind fifth-place Sacred Heart (923) in the 12-team meet, which features combined men's and women's scoring. Bryant (2860.5), the host Engineers (1836), Bentley (1208) and Springfield (1108) own the top four spots on the team leaderboard.
The Babson men had swimmers qualify for the A final in all five individual events, highlighted by junior
Pat Anutarasoti (Bangkok, Thailand) finishing second in a pair of events. He posted a season-best time of 21.05 seconds to finish runner-up in the 50 free and a season-best time of 49.64 to take second in the 100 butterfly. He was one of four Beavers to compete in the A final of the 100 fly as senior
Blake Albanese (Middletown, N.Y.) finished fifth in a season-best time of 51.13, sophomore
Matthew D'Elia (Old Bridge, N.J.) was seventh in a season-best 51.50, and sophomore
Zackary Cheung (Monterey Park, Calif.) placed eighth in 51.69 after posting a season-best time of 51.28 in the morning prelims.
Sophomore
Spencer Ernst (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) turned in a strong third-place finish in the A final of the 500 free with a season-best 4:45.37. The Beavers had a pair of fourth-place finishes in the A finals with season-best times from seniors
Nathan Ford (Charlotte, N.C.) in the 50 free (21.22) and
Joshua Sellers (Fair Oaks, Calif.) in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.96). Cheung also qualified for the A final in the 200 IM and placed sixth in 1:58.13 after posting a season-best 1:56.58 in the prelims.
Babson's 800-yard free relay team of Ford, Ernst, senior
Joshua Kim (La Cañada Flintridge, Calif.) and Albanese captured third place in 7:06.56, and the 200 medley relay contingent of Kim, Albanese, Anutarasoti and Ford finished fourth in 1:33.66.
The Beaver men also had three swimmers in the B finals with all recording season-best times. Junior
Aidan Downey-Lamprey (Norwell, Mass.) was fourth in the 50 free in 21.74, senior
Oak Kornsri (Bangkok, Thailand) was sixth in the 200 breast in 2:19.49, and sophomore
Hawken Hammen (East Lyme, Conn.) was eighth in the 100 fly in 53.13 after posting a 53.02 in the prelims.
Three Beavers competed in the C finals as senior
Max Weygandt (Madison, Wis.) was second in the 500 free in a season-best 4:56.72, Hammen was seventh in the 50 free in 22.71 after a season-best 22.64 in the morning, and first-year
Matthew Choi (Pebble Beach, Calif.) finished eighth in the 100 fly in 54.91 after posting a 54.31 in the prelims.
The Babson women were led by senior
Vera Belfonti (Orange, Conn.), who placed ninth in the B final of the 100 fly with a time of 1:02.02, after posting a season-best 1:00.02 in the morning prelims. Senior
Sophia Swain (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) finished sixth in the C final of the 100 fly in a season-best time of 1:00.83.

The Green and White had three competitors post season-best times in the C final of the 200 breast, as sophomore
Vangella Randell (Holden, Mass.) finished fourth in 2:44.03, classmate
Julia Ahn (Fullerton, Calif.) took eighth in 2:48.05 after recording a 2:45.76 in the prelims, and senior
Christina Sung (Sharon, Mass.) was 10th in 2:57.65.
Babson returns to the pool on Saturday when it competes in day two events at the Gompei Invitational starting at 8:30 a.m.
