BABSON PARK, Mass.— Sophomore Joshua Burke (Tampa, Fla.) scored a pair of unassisted goals and added an assist of his own as Amherst College doubled up Babson College, 4-2, in a non-conference men's hockey match-up Sunday afternoon inside the Babson Skating Center.
With the loss, Babson had its six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) snapped and dropped to 5-4-2 overall while the Mammoths evened their record at 2-2-0 overall.
Sophomore
Egan Schmitt (Schuylerville, N.Y.) tallied a goal and an assist and classmate
Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) scored one goal for the Beavers. Sophomores
Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ontario) and
Will Holland (Charlotte, N.C.) and first-year
Jimmy Fallon (Milton, Mass.) added one helper each and sophomore goalie
Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) finished with 19 saves in the loss.
Junior Matt Toporowski (Kirkland, Que.) registered a goal and an assist for the visitors, and sophomore Ben Ritter (Pittsford, N.Y.) tallied his first goal of the season. Senior Connor Guest (Peterborough, Ont.) added an assist and junior Connor Leslie (Leesburg, Va.) made 27 saves to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Amherst scored the only goal of the first period at the 7:38 mark when Burke blocked a Babson shot from the point, then grabbed the rebound and raced down the left side and in tight on Mueller before burying a shot for his first goal of the season.
The 1-0 score lasted until late in the second period when the teams combined for three goals in 59 seconds. Ritter snapped a wrist shot past Muller from the slot after a feed from Toporowski from the right corner at 16:55, and the Mammoths extended their lead to 3-0 just 14 seconds later when Toporowski converted a give-and-go with Burke from the top of the left circle at 17:09.
Babson answered with its first goal just 45 seconds later when Murphy converted from the slot after a drop pass from Kennedy along the right goal line at 17:54.
The Beavers pulled to within a goal with a power play marker at 2:31 of the third period when Schmitt snuck behind the Amherst defense and slid a backhander past Leslie to make it 3-2. That margin lasted just a minute and a half as Burke stole a Babson pass deep in its own zone and went in alone on Mueller and slid a shot through the pads for his second of the game at 4:01.
Babson had another power play opportunity in the third period and pulled the goalie with two minutes remaining in favor of an extra skater but could not get any closer.
The Green and White finished with a 29-23 margin in shots on goal, went 1-for-2 on the power play and did not commit a penalty in the contest.
Both teams return to conference action on Friday at 7 p.m. as Babson hosts Castleton in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) encounter and Amherst travels to Wesleyan for a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) match-up.
