BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior
Matt Cormier (Waltham, Mass.) scored 1:51 into overtime to lift Babson College to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over visiting Vermont State University Castleton in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action Friday night inside the Babson Skating Center.
With the win, Babson improves to 6-4-2 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 5-0-1. Castleton drops to 4-6-0 overall and 2-3-0 in NEHC contests.
Sophomore
Egan Schmitt (Schuylerville, N.Y.) finished with two goals and one assist and first-year
Jimmy Fallon (Milton, Mass.) had a goal and an assist to lead the Beavers. Senior
Colby Bailey (Southborough, Mass.) and sophomores
Will Holland (Charlotte, N.C.),
Nolan Dion (Marshfield, Mass.),
Charlie Andriole (Branford, Conn.),
Mike Stevens (Massapequa, N.Y.) and
Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ontario) each contributed a helper in the win.
First-year
Mason Rosado (Weddington, N.C.) turned away 23 shots between the pipes to earn his first collegiate victory for Babson.
Junior Bryce Irwin (Victoria, British Columbia) and first-years Josef Vyvial (Kolin, Czech Republic) and Cam Reid (Kimberley, British Columbia) each had a goal for the Spartans, who got 40 saves from sophomore goaltender Josh Ward (Ottawa, Ontario).
The Green and White didn't give up a shot on goal over the first 12 minutes but fell behind 1-0 when Vyvial scored with a wrist shot through traffic from the top of the left circle on the power play at 15:04 of the first period. Rosado denied senior Grady Birk (San Diego, Calif.) on a breakaway less than a minute later and the Beavers evened things up when Stevens forced a turnover in the neutral zone before Schmitt jammed home a feed from Fallon for his sixth goal of the year just 2:10 into the second.
Castleton needed just 22 seconds to regain the lead though, as senior Justin Stairs (Caledon, Ontario) kept the puck in the zone following a face-off and Irwin cleaned up the rebound of a shot by junior Zach Trempner (Lethbridge, Alberta) from the high slot to make it 2-1. Babson pulled even at 9:42 of the second when Fallon beat Ward with a quick shot from the left circle off a feed in transition from Schmitt for his second tally of the year.
The Spartans killed off a penalty early in the third and took their third one-goal lead of the night thanks to a power play goal by Reid at the 11:18 mark. Rosado made a blocker save on junior Zach Papapetros' (North Andover, Mass.) blast from the top of the right face-off circle but Reid buried the loose puck at the far post for a 3-2 advantage.
Babson lifted Rosado for an extra attacker with 2:14 remaining and tied the game following an offensive zone face-off with 2:06 to play in regulation. Andriole collected Bailey's pass off the boards and Schmitt redirected his blast from the left point for his second goal of the night.
The Beavers had the only two shots over the 3-on-3 extra session and Dion found Cormier all alone in front for the game winner just under two minutes into the period.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson hosts No. 13 Skidmore, while Castleton travels to Southern Maine.
