Women's Hoops Cruises Past Brandeis in Home Opener, 79-44

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Kelly Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) poured in a career-high 28 points to lead three players in double figures as No. 13 D3hoops.com Babson College cruised past visiting Brandeis University, 79-44, in non-conference women's basketball on Tuesday evening inside Staake Gymnasium. 

Babson, which has won two of its last three games, improves to 3-2 on the year, while Brandeis dips to 1-4 overall. 

Walsh finished 11-of-19 from the floor and added three steals and two blocked shots, while junior Katelyn Mollica (Foxborough, Mass.) scored all 13 of her points in the second half in addition to dishing out a game-high five assists for the Beavers. Classmate Abby Miller (Millis, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds, sophomore Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) added six points and a game-high 10 boards and senior Rachel McMenemy (Northborough, Mass.) pulled down a season-high eight caroms in the victory. 

Sophomores Brooke Reed (Chantilly, Va.) and Abby Kennedy (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) both scored eight points and hauled in eight rebounds to lead the Judges. 

Walsh and Miller combined for Babson's first 12 points before Perreault knocked down consecutive jumpers for a 16-5 lead less than six minutes into the contest. Brandeis cut its deficit to eight but Walsh scored five straight points to end the first quarter and buried her third triple of the half 11 seconds into the second to extend the margin to 24-8. 

Miller canned a three-pointer at the 7:24 mark and sophomore Claire McCarthy (Dorchester, Mass.) converted a feed from Walsh two possessions later to give the Green and White its largest lead of the half at 30-8 with 6:13 to go before halftime. 

The Beavers led 36-15 at the break and got 10 points from Mollica and five from Walsh as part of a 17-9 spurt that pushed their advantage to 53-24 just over six minutes into the third period. The Judges got as close as 62-39 on a three-pointer by junior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass.) with 6:14 to go in the fourth before getting outscored 17-5 the rest of the way. 

Mollica followed up three straight points by junior Camilla Silk (Medfield, Mass.) with a three-pointer, senior Madison Odam (San Jose, Calif.) knocked down a pair of free throws and first-year Samantha Reale (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished off a six-point possession with a pair of layups sandwiched around two free throws after an intentional foul to make it 76-41 with 3:01 remaining. 

Babson shot 55.6 percent in the second half and 43.3 percent for the game and outscored Brandeis 38-18 in the paint. The Beavers also finished with a 49-40 advantage on the glass. 

The Judges were just 4-of-28 shooting in the first half finished at just 23.8 percent the game

Babson returns to action on Sunday when it hosts No. 5/6 Rhode Island College at 1 p.m., while Brandeis takes on Roger Williams on Monday at 6 p.m. 

GAME NOTES
•    The Beavers are 30-25 all-time against Brandeis and have won three straight and 10 of the last 12 games in the series. 
•    Babson has won 17 of its last 19 games at home and is 34-5 inside Staake Gymnasium since January 2021. 
•    The Green and White has won 21 of its last 22 outings when outrebounding its opponents. 
•    The Beavers are 36-1 going back to the 2020-21 campaign when scoring at least 70 points.
