No. 13 Women's Hoops Edged by No. 5/6 Rhode Island College, 53-48

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Kelly Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) scored a game-high 20 points but No. 13 D3hoops.com Babson College was outscored 11-4 in the fourth quarter and suffered a 53-48 loss to No. 5 D3hoops.com/No. 6 WBCA Rhode Island College in non-conference women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium. 

Babson drops to 3-3 on the year with the loss, while Rhode Island College improves to 5-0 overall. 

Junior Camilla Silk (Medfield, Mass.) added seven points and pulled down a season-high nine rebounds, sophomore Chloe Perreault (Danbury, Conn.) chipped in with six points and seven boards and senior Madison Odam (San Jose, Calif.) and sophomore Claire McCarthy (Dorchester, Mass.) both contributed six points to lead the Beavers. 

Olivia Middleton (Barrington, R.I.) led three players in double figures with 14 points and Sophia Guerrier (Waltham, Mass.) added 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals to pace the Anchorwomen. Neleesha Meunier (Leominster, Mass.) also posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 boards in the win. 

Guerrier gave Rhode Island College a 6-5 lead just over five minute into the contest and Madison Medbury (Scituate, R.I.) scored five points during a 9-0 run that helped the visitors build their largest lead of the game at 16-7 with 37 seconds to go in opening stanza. McCarthy beat the first quarter buzzer with a triple from the left wing, junior Katelyn Mollica (Foxborough, Mass.) trimmed the Babson deficit to 16-14 with another three-pointer just 49 seconds into the second and back-to-back trifectas by Walsh and Odam put the Green and White back in front 20-19 with 6:20 to go until halftime. 

Odam drilled another three-pointer from the top of the key to push the margin to 25-21 at the 3:30 mark but the Anchorwomen closed the period with a 9-2 spurt to take a 30-27 advantage into the locker room. The Beavers went back in front 33-32 thanks to consecutive three-pointers by Walsh and used buckets by Silk and McCarthy to match their largest lead of the day at 38-34 midway through the third quarter. 

Walsh scored Babson's final six points of the third to maintain a 44-42 edge and Silk scored on a putback to make it 46-43 with 6:39 to go in the fourth. Guerrier tied the game with a layup at the 3:46 mark and Middleton converted a three-point play on the following possession to give Rhode Island College the lead for good at 49-46 with 2:45 remaining. 

Walsh cut the Beavers' deficit to 51-48 with 1:16 to go and both her and Mollica got off potential game-tying three pointers over the final seconds but neither went down and Middleton sealed the Anchorwomen's victory with two free throws with 0.4 seconds left. 

Babson shot 34 percent and were outrebounded 39-37 by Rhode Island College, which shot just 32.2 percent in the win. 

The Beavers return to action on Friday when they face Middlebury at 8 p.m. in Williamstown, Mass., while the Anchorwomen travel to nationally-ranked Trinity on Wednesday at 7 p.m. 

GAME NOTES
•    The Beavers are now 5-3 all-time against Rhode Island College. 
•    Sunday's loss marks just the second time in the last 43 games that Babson has lost when leading after three quarters. 
•    The Green and White is now 34-6 at home since January 2021 with five of the six losses coming to nationally-ranked opponents. 
•    In four career games against Rhode Island College, Walsh is averaging 18.0 points.
