Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) scored 2:12 into overtime as visiting Babson College rallied from a three-goal deficit to defeat Johnson & Wales University, 5-4, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Friday night inside the New England Sports Village.
With its third straight win, Babson improves to 3-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in conference play. Johnson & Wales slips to 0-5-1 overall and 0-4-1 in NEHC play with its second consecutive loss.
Sophomore
Egan Schmitt (Schuylerville, N.Y.) and first-year
Jimmy Fallon (Milton, Mass.) both scored once, Murphy had two assists and sophomore
Charlie Andriole (Branford, Conn.) chipped in with a helper in the win for the Beavers. Sophomore
Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) made 27 saves to record his third straight win in between the pipes.
Brendan Shanley (Norfolk, Mass.) had a goal and two assists, while Joe Freeman (Milton, Mass.), Brent Rickett (Portland, Maine) and Brendan Doyle (Stratham, N.H.) all finished with a goal and an assist for the Wildcats. First-year goaltender Jake Inzirillo (West Islip, N.Y.) made 21 saves in the loss.
Kramer gave the Green and White a 1-0 lead just 4:38 into the contest by putting away his own rebound before Johnson & Wales answered with four consecutive goals. Shandley tied the game on the power play at the 11:20 mark of the first and Freeman gave the hosts a 2-1 advantage with a blast from the top of the right circle with 1:49 to go in the opening period.
Doyle made it 3-1 at 6:51 of the second and Rickett followed with a one-timer from the slot just 79 seconds later to give the Wildcats a 4-1 edge. The Beavers cut their deficit to two just over four minutes later when Fallon jammed home a rebound on the power play for his first collegiate goal.
Babson pulled within 4-3 just over seven minutes into the third period on Kramer's second goal of the night when he beat Inzirillo with the rebound of a shot that was tipped by Fallon. The Green and White tied the game at 4-4 less than four minutes later as Schmitt kept the puck in the zone along the right boards and then went to the front of the net to redirect Bailey's shot from the point.
Bailey was involved in the overtime game winner as well as he blocked a pair of shots, the second of which set up Murphy's game winner off a feed from Fallon on a 2-on-1 just over two minutes into the extra session.
The Wildcats finished with a 31-26 edge in shots and went 4-for-5 on the power play, while the Beavers scored three times in six power play opportunities.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson visits UMass Boston, while Johnson & Wales hosts Southern Maine.
