BABSON PARK, Mass.— Junior
Matt Cormier (Waltham, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and sophomore goalie
Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) made a career-high 46 saves as Babson College upset No. 1 Hobart College, 3-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's hockey action Saturday afternoon inside the Babson Skating Center.
With the win, Babson posted its second victory in as many days over a top 10 team and improved to 2-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the NEHC while Hobart had its four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 4-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 league play.
First-year
Joseph Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored a goal for the second straight game for the Beavers, sophomore
Cam Joslin (Cohasset, Mass.) collected two assists for his first two points of the season, and sophomores
Charlie Andriole (Branford, Conn.) and
Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) tallied one assist apiece in the win.
Hobart, which was coming off four straight shutouts while outscoring its opponents 27-0, including a 10-0 rout of Southern Maine on Friday, was held to one goal by the Beavers, a second-period power play goal by Luke Aquaro (Yardley, Pa.) with assists from senior Jared Patterson (Greely, Ontario) and junior Shane Shell (Westfield, N.J.). Sophomore goalie Mavrick Goyer (Ste-Sophie, Quebec) made 10 saves in the setback.
The visitors had a 15-6 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period but Babson scored the only goal. Joslin intercepted a pass along the left boards and found a streaking Cormier in the left circle and Cormier ripped a shot past Goyer into the upper right corner at the 5:19 mark to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
That lead lasted the rest of the first period and into the second, when the Green and White doubled the lead. Andriole snapped a shot from the left point that was tipped by Kramer past Goyer at 5:03 to make it a 2-0 game. Cormier extended the lead to 3-0 at the 17:22 mark with a backhander from the left circle after Joslin helped set up the play.
Hobart finally got on the board at 18:10 of the second period when Aquaro buried a rebound for a power play goal but time ran out on the second period to prevent any momentum for the Statesmen and despite a 29-12 shot advantage through two periods, Babson held a 3-1 lead.
The shot barrage for Hobart continued in the third period as the visitors had an 18-1 margin but Mueller had the answer to every one. The Statesmen had two power play opportunities and managed four shots to no avail. Hobart pulled Goyer for the last 1:46 but could not score with the man advantage, ending their winning streak with the two-goal victory.
Hobart finished with a 47-13 lead in shots on goal and went 1-for-3 on the power play while Babson was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
Both teams will play again next Friday at 7 p.m. as Babson travels to Johnson & Wales and Hobart returns home for a non-conference game against Buffalo State.
