SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.—Junior
Jordyn Ferrantino (Millis, Mass.) scored a pair of goals less than 90 seconds in the first half to help visiting Babson College edge Mount Holyoke College, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
Babson has won back-to-back games to improve to 6-3-2 overall and 4-0-1 in conference play. Mount Holyoke is winless over its last eight games and slips to 2-6-2 overall and 0-5-0 in the NEWMAC with the setback.
Graduate student
Morgan Krauss (Belmont, Mass.) finished with two assists and first-year goalkeeper
Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) made four saves for the Beavers.
Sophomore Charlotte Moynihan (North Attleboro, Mass.) had a goal and junior Hannah Keochakian (Amherst, Mass.) picked up an assist for the Lyons, who got nine saves from sophomore goalkeeper Clarrissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.).
Mount Holyoke jumped in front in the 16th minute on Moynihan's third marker of the year. Following a throw in on the right side line, Keochakian lofted a ball into the box and Moynihan got behind a Babson defender and beat the diving Cottone with a bouncing header.
The Green and White pulled even less than 15 minutes later when Krauss' service from the right wing skipped through box and past Govea to the back post where Ferrantino knocked it into the open net. She then put the Beavers in front for good in the 32nd minute stepping in front of a Lyons' defender at the penalty spot to put away another cross from the right by Krauss for her team-leading seventh goal.
Babson outshot the hosts 10-4 over the final 45 minutes but needed some heroics from Cottone and the defense to maintain its advantage in the 52nd minute. Cottone came off her line to get a hand on sophomore Ada Siepmann's (Vlotho, Germany) shot from just inside the top of the box and first-year
Jadyn Mapura (East Hanover, N.J.) recovered to block Moynihan's rebound attempt before Siepmann sent the Lyons' third chance sailing over the crossbar.
The Green and White finished with a 25-12 bulge in shots and attempted all nine corner kicks in the game.
Babson returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Middlebury at 12 p.m., while Mount Holyoke takes on Springfield on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
