BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Roshann Purcell (Seattle, Wash.) scored the decisive goal in the 68th minute as visiting Middlebury College defeated Babson College, 2-1, in non-conference women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Babson, which suffered just its second loss over the last seven games, drops to 6-4-2 on the year. Middlebury extended its unbeaten streak to four matches and is now 5-2-4 overall.
Senior
Emma Mumby (Westborough, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal and first-year goalkeeper
Callahan Cottone (Medway, Mass.) finished with eight saves in the loss for the Beavers.
Senior Joely Virzi (Cincinnati, Ohio) had a goal and classmate Beatrice Donovan (New York, N.Y.) and junior Sophia Cole (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) provided assists for the Panthers. Senior Carolyn Kelly (Westborough, Mass.) stopped three shots to improve to 2-1-2 on the year with the victory.
Junior
Laura Lukowicz (Coventry, R.I.) appeared to put the Green and White in front when her free kick from just inside of midfield went off the hands of Kelly less than seven minutes into the game but the goal was waived off following a foul call. Cottone made three early saves and Middlebury hit the crossbar in the 25th minute before taking a 1-0 lead on Virzi's team-leading fourth goal just shy of the half-hour mark.
She had time to settle Donovan's long service into the box and drilled a shot back inside the left post at the 29:17 mark. The Beavers equalized just over eight minutes later though as Mumby converted a penalty kick after Lukowicz was taken down in the goal mouth on a corner kick in the 38th minute.
The visitors outshot Babson 12-3 over the final 45 minutes and went in front for good with just under 23 minutes remaining. Cottone came off her line and got her fingertips on Cole's corner kick but the ball fell right to Purcell who finished from inside of 10 yards for her first marker of the year.
First-year
Claudia Baiter (Miami, Fla.) cleared first-year Gigi Day's (Washington, Conn.) shot off the goal line in the 71st minute to keep the margin at one but the Beavers were unable to create any scoring chances over the final 20 minutes of the match.
The Panthers finished with a 21-8 edge in shots, while the Green and White held a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Emerson at 3:30 p.m., while Middlebury travels to Trinity on Saturday at 11 a.m.
