Jonah Wilson (Gilbert, Ariz.) and sophomore
Martin Mejia (Cali, Colombia) were winners in both singles and doubles in both matches as the Babson College men's tennis team swept its first two dual matches of the season, an 8-1 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) verdict over Emerson College and a 9-0 non-conference triumph over Eastern Nazarene College Thursday afternoon and evening at the Babson Tennis Courts.
With the wins, the Beavers start the year 2-0 in dual matches (1-0 NEWMAC), while Emerson drops to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference and Eastern Nazarene slides to 0-2.
Babson 8, Emerson 1
Wilson and Mejia took an easy 8-2 victory at number one doubles and then swept their matches in straight sets at first and second singles to lead the Beavers. Graduate student
Andrew Watson (Charlottesville, Va.) and first-year
Mattias Harrell (Oslo, Norway) were also double winners for the Green and White, pairing up for an 8-1 win at third doubles and posting identical 6-0, 6-0 victories at fourth and sixth singles, respectively.
First-years
Caymus Choi (Hong Kong, China) and
Logan Back (Busan, South Korea) completed the doubles sweep for the Beavers, needing a tiebreaker to pull out the second flight, 8-7 (7-2). Senior
Jose Gonzalez (Asheville, N.C.) also registered a 6-2, 6-1 victory at third singles for the home team.
Emerson first-year Seth Keana prevented the shutout by the Beavers, knocking off Back in a super-breaker at fifth singles, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Babson 8, Eastern Nazarene 0
The Beavers repeated their performances in doubles by sweeping all three matches. Wilson and Mejia captured an 8-4 victory in the first flight, Choi and Back cruised to an 8-1 verdict in the second flight, and Gonzalez and first-year
Kerem Ozlale (Istanbul, Turkey) were 8-2 winners in the third flight.
All six singles matches were completed in straight sets. Wilson and Mejia put away their opponents in less than an hour, Wilson winning 6-0, 6-2 at number one and Mejia cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number four. Ozlale finished off his second win of the match with a 7-5, 6-0 triumph at second singles and Choi did the same at third singles, 6-1, 6-0. Gonzalez cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at fifth singles, and Harrell added a 7-5, 6-1 triumph at number six.
The Beavers wrap up the first semester of competition next weekend, October 14-15, at the Wesleyan Invitational in Middletown, Conn.
MATCH NOTES
• Babson is 13-0 all-time against Emerson in a series that dates back to 2008 and 3-0 all-time against Eastern Nazarene in a series that goes back to 2018.
• Wilson improved his singles record to a team-best 7-2 this season, while Watson is now 6-2 in singles and Gonzalez is 6-3.
• Choi (4-2), Back (4-2) and Mejia (4-3) share the team lead with four doubles victories apiece, while Wilson (3-2) and Watson (3-1) have three doubles wins each.
