Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Sweeps Assumption on Senior Night

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Erin Gray (Oakland, Calif.) led all players with 12 kills and Babson College hit .367 to sweep visiting Assumption University, 25-12, 25-21, 25-20, in non-conference women's volleyball action on Friday night inside Staake Gymnasium.

With its second consecutive victory, Babson improves to 22-4 on the year. Assumption has dropped two straight matches to fall to 6-12 overall.

Senior Lulu McShane (Glencoe, Ill.) recorded six kills to go along with a .600 hitting percentage, while first-year Natalie Molendyk (Danville, Calif.) added seven kills to lead the Beavers. Senior Ruby Reich (Atlanta, Ga.) finished with 19 assists and nine digs, classmate Caroline Applewhite (Boca Raton, Fla.) dished out 15 assists and fellow senior Olivia Leinenweber (Neptune Beach, Fla.) chipped in with nine digs in the win.

Junior Alexis Distasio (Orlando, Fla.) recorded nine kills and seven digs, first-year Sophia Kane (Vancouver, Wash.) registered eight kills and senior Sophia Noel (Hampden, Mass.) handed out a team-high 10 assists to pace the Greyhounds. Fellow senior Brandi Montoya (Aurora, Colo.) also finished with a match-high 10 digs in the loss.

The Green and White hit .440 and made just one error in a dominating first-set performance. Gray had two of her five kills in the stanza during an 8-1 run that pushed the hosts' lead to 16-8 and sophomore Roz Cabuena (Kailua, Hawaii) served up back-to-back aces as the Beavers closed the frame with a 7-1 spurt.

Game two featured 14 ties and four lead changes with no lead bigger than two for either team until late. Babson took advantage of three errors and a block by Leinenweber and first-year Hailey Fouche (Montclair, N.J.) as part of a four-point run to break a 20-20 deadlock and Molendyk put away a kill on set point for a 2-0 advantage.

The Beavers led by as many as four early in the third but needed a late surge to pull away to complete the sweep. Sophomore Isabella Allen (Williamsville, N.Y.) gave the Green and White a 17-15 lead with a kills and Gray and junior Lauren Griffin (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) combined for a block following another kill by McShane to extend the margin to 20-16. The Greyhounds got as close as three late in the stanza but a kill by McShane and a pair of errors by the visitors finished off the win.

Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts No. 17 MIT at 6 p.m., while Assumption takes on Bentley on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
