Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Knocks off No. 18 MIT, 3-1

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Lauren Gips (Winter Park, Fla.) led three players in double figures with 14 kills to go along with a career-high nine blocks and sophomore Roz Cabuena (Kailua, Hawaii) finished with a career-best 37 digs to help Babson College defeat No. 18 MIT in four sets (25-12, 19-25, 25-17, 27-25) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's volleyball action inside Staake Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

With its third straight win, Babson improves to 23-4 overall and 9-1 in conference play while snapping MIT's 16-match winning streak. The Engineers are now 25-4 overall and 8-2 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Lulu McShane (Glencoe, Ill.) hit .458 and recorded 13 kills and four blocks, while classmate Erin Gray (Oakland, Calif.) added 12 kills and five blocks to pace the Beavers. First-year Zoe Ackerman (Aurora, Colo.) dished out 38 assists and sophomore Sophia Shaw (Novato, Calif.) chipped in with 10 digs in the win.

Sophomore Claire Underwood (Yorba Linda, Calif.) registered a team-high 14 kills and senior Emily Cheng (Sunnyvale, Calif.) contributed 38 assists and 18 digs to lead the Engineers. Fellow senior Consecrata Rozario (Cary, N.C.) added nine kills, sophomore Ali Gibbs (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) had a team-high six blocks and junior Olivia Pesoneni (Bethesda, Md.) was one of five players in double figures with 18 digs.

Gips and Gray combined for 10 kills as the Green and White hit .435 and used a 14-2 run to pull away from MIT for an easy opening-set victory. The Beavers were up by as many as four twice in the second before the Engineers used an 8-0 spurt that included three kills by Greenwood to take an 11-7 advantage. The hosts pulled back within two on two occasions, the last coming at 19-17, before MIT scored six of the final eight points in the stanza to even the match.

Game three featured 10 ties and five lead changes before the Beavers pulled away from a 17-17 deadlock with eight straight points. The hosts took advantage of three straight attack errors to go in front 20-17 and McShane put away her third and fourth kills of the frame over the next three points to extend the margin to six.

The Green and White raced out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth but the teams were never separated by more than two at any point after the Engineers pulled even at 9-9. MIT had a pair of set points only to see Gips twice answer with kills for the hosts, which got a kill from McShane to go in front for good 26-25 and a block by Gray and McShane on match point.

Both teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday as Babson travels to Springfield at 1 p.m., while MIT hosts Smith at 12 p.m.
