Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Late Goals Lift MSOE over No. 15 Men's Ice Hockey in Season Opener, 4-1

MILWAUKEE, Wis.—The Milwaukee School of Engineering scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart late in the third period to break up a 1-1 tie and went on to defeat No. 15 Babson College, 4-1, in the non-conference men's ice hockey season opener for both schools inside the Kern Center.

With the loss, the Beavers had their three-game winning streak in season openers snapped and start the year at 0-1 while the Raiders open their campaign at 1-0.

Sophomore Ryan Murphy (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) scored the lone Beaver goal on a power play in the closing seconds of the second period, with assists from senior Thomas Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore Will Holland (Charlotte, N.C.). Sophomore Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) made 23 saves in goal in the setback.

Junior Charlie Skinner (Towson, Md.) and sophomores Carson Jones (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Jacob Bosse (Montreal, Quebec) and Jackson Hughes (South Lyon, Mich.) were the goal scorers for MSOE, and sophomore Cole Beilke (Stevens Point, Wis.) produced a pair of assists. Sophomore Austin Schwab (Snohomish, Wash.) made 28 saves to earn the win in goal for the Raiders.

Jones tallied the only goal of the opening period on a Raider power play. Beilke snapped a shot from the left point that was kicked out by Mueller but Jones collected the rebound in the right circle and delivered a backhander past Mueller inside the left post at 14:26 of the period.

The Beavers evened the score on their third power play opportunity of the middle period. Kramer sent a pass from the right circle to Murphy below the goal line, and Murphy circled out in front and buried a shot inside the left post with just 16.7 seconds left in the period to tie the score at 1-1.

The hosts scored what turned out to be the game-winner at 14:20 of the third period when Skinner tipped a shot by Beilke from the top of the left circle through the pads of Mueller. Bosse added some insurance with a power play goal at 16:03, ripping a shot from the high slot that beat a screened Mueller.

After MSOE was whistled for a penalty with 3:23 remaining, Babson pulled Mueller for a 6-on-4 advantage but could not convert, and Hughes rounded out the scoring with an empty net goal with 15 seconds remaining.

Babson finished with a 29-27 advantage in shots on goal. MSOE went 2-for-3 on the power play while the Beavers were just 1-for-7 with the man advantage.

Both teams will be on the ice again on Saturday as the Green and White visit Lake Forest (Ill.) at 6 p.m. (ET) and MSOE hosts Saint Mary's (Minn.) at 3 p.m. (CT).
