WORCESTER, Mass.—Junior goalkeeper
Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made one save and No. 13 Babson College was held to a 0-0 draw at Clark University on Wednesday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action at Granger Field.
With the tie, Babson moves to 10-3-5 overall and 5-0-2 in the NEWMAC while Clark, which had dropped six of its last seven games, is now 3-9-4 overall and 1-4-2 in conference play. The Beavers are unbeaten in their last nine outings (5-0-4), alternating wins and draws over the last eight contests.
White's clean sheet was his fourth in a row for the Beavers and 11th this season, which leads the NEWMAC and is tied for the national lead in Division III.
The Beavers finished with a 22-9 advantage in total shot attempts and an 8-1 margin in shots on target. Senior Andrew DiStefano (West Chester, Pa.) turned in a solid performance in goal for the Cougars, finishing with eight saves for his second shutout of the season.
The Green and White put five shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes but couldn't get on the scoreboard. The best save by DiStefano may have been his first, just five minutes in after first-year
Alexander Yablonovskiy (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) sent graduate student
Justin Stone (Cary, N.C.) in on a partial breakaway with a through ball but DiStefano came out aggressively to break up the play.
DiStefano dove to his left to stop a shot by graduate student
Owen Guglielmino (Cheshire, Conn.) early in the second half. Clark had its best scoring opportunity in the 65th minute but White dove to his right to deny a shot from 25 yards out by senior Anyolo Makatiani (Nairobi, Kenya) and aggressively forced a shot on the rebound by senior Teddy Donahue (Georgetown, Mass.) to go wide.
The Beavers kept the ball in the Clark zone much of the second half but managed just two shots on goal over the final 40 minutes. DiStefano saved a contested shot from 15 yards out by senior
Ryan Kim (San Ramon, Calif.) in the 74th minutes and stopped a low liner from 30 yards out by senior
Samuel Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) in the 77th minute.
Both teams wrap up the regular season with conference games on Saturday as Babson visits Coast Guard at 12 p.m. and Clark hosts Emerson at 1 p.m. The Beavers will need a victory to capture the NEWMAC regular season title while Clark goes into the game one point shy of the final conference playoff berth.
