Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Edges Salve Regina, 3-2

NEWPORT, R.I.—Senior Olivia Maltbie (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and junior Jordyn Ferrantino (Millis, Mass.) each scored once to help visiting Babson College defeat Salve Regina University, 3-2, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Toppa Field.

With its third straight win, Babson improves to 9-5-2 overall and 7-1-1 in conference play. Salve Regina drops to 4-7-4 overall and 2-7-0 in the NEWMAC with the loss.

Graduate student Morgan Krauss (Belmont, Mass.) recorded her team-leading fifth assist and junior goalkeeper Nora Ryan (Abington, Mass.) made four saves to earn her second consecutive victory for the Beavers.

First-year Allie Gallagher (Staten Island, N.Y.) and sophomore Sara Wiejkus (Marshfield, Mass.) each had a goal and first-year Olivia Tacconi (Waldwick, N.J.) provided an assist for the Seahawks. First-year goalkeeper Sabrina Lawless (Milford, Conn.) finished with six saves in defeat.

The Green and White took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Lawless misplayed Krauss' service from the right wing allowing Ferrantino to knock the loose ball inside the right post for her team-leading ninth goal. The Beavers doubled their advantage just over 90 seconds into the second half when senior Natalie Knauf's (Point Pleasant, N.J.) cross from the left flank was miskicked by a Salve Regina defender leading to an own goal.

The Seahawks pulled one back in the 50th minute when Gallagher played a corner kick to the near post that skipped past a Babson defender and Ryan before ending up in the side netting to make it 2-1. The Beavers regained a two-goal lead in the 64th minute though as Maltbie's 25-yard strike sailed over the head of Lawless and under the crossbar for her fifth marker of the year and a 3-1 advantage.

Salve Regina pulled back within a goal for the second time in the 81st minute when Wiejkus headed home a cross from Tacconi. Wiejkus had a chance to tie the game less than a minute later but saw her chip with Ryan off her line miss the target.

Babson finished with a 17-13 edge in shots and attempted nine of the 12 corner kicks in the match.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as the Beavers travel to Springfield, while Salve Regina visits Coast Guard.
