BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College scored a goal in each half and got a career-high 11 saves from junior goalkeeper Nora Ryan (Abington, Mass.) to defeat No. 9 MIT, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With the victory, Babson improved to 8-5-2 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play with its second consecutive win. MIT, which had its eight-game winning streak snapped, dips to 13-2-1 overall and 7-1-0 in NEWMAC play.
Senior Olivia Maltbie (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and junior Jordyn Ferrantino (Millis, Mass.) each had a goal for the Beavers. Senior Cassie Lawson (Davie, Fla.) also provided an assist in the win.
First-year Arianna Doss (Houston, Texas) had a goal and junior Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) contributed an assist for the Engineers. Senior goalkeeper Morgan Everett (Danville, Pa.) made four saves in the loss.
The Green and White attempted four first-half corner kicks and took the lead on its final opportunity when Ferrantino scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 34th minute. She settled Lawson's service at the top of the box and drilled a left-footed half-volley inside the right post.
The Beavers doubled their advantage in the 63rd minute when Ferrantino was tripped up just inside the box after senior Natalie Knauf (Point Pleasant, N.J.) forced a turnover. Maltbie stepped up and blasted her penalty kick past Everett for her fourth goal of the year.
MIT cut its deficit in half in the 77th minute when Doss ran onto a long pass by English and drilled a shot past the charging Ryan for her second goal. The visitors were unable to find an equalizer though as Ryan saved her two best stops of the day for the final 11 minutes of the match. She made a sprawling stop to deny a strike by Doss at the right post in the 80th minute and then stepped off her line to push away a volley from the penalty spot by Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) in the 87th minute.
Ryan was well-positioned for a number of her seven first-half saves but was forced into a diving stop going to her right to snare Sedgwick's bid from the top of the box with 67 seconds to go before the break.
The Engineers owned a 27-8 edge in shots and an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Salve Regina at 12 p.m., while MIT hosts WPI at 1 p.m.
