NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—Senior
Olivia Maltbie (Niskayuna, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 72nd minute as visiting Babson College rallied for a 2-1 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.
Babson, which snapped a two-game skid, improves to 7-5-2 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play. Smith saw its three-game winning streak come to an end and is now 5-4-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the NEWMAC.
Senior
Natalie Knauf (Point Pleasant, N.J.) had a goal and classmate
Cassie Lawson (Davie, Fla.) contributed an assist for the Beavers. Junior
Nora Ryan (Abington, Mass.) made one save to earn her first victory of the season.
Junior Sklyer Williams (San Diego, Calif.) scored her second goal of the year and sophomore Skylar Smith (Carlisle, Mass.) finished with five saves for the Pioneers.
The Green and White had the only two shots on goal in the opening half and nearly took the lead four minutes into the second half on a volleyball by graduate student
Morgan Krauss (Belmont, Mass.) that went just over the crossbar. Smith went in front against the run of play in the 55th minute as a long cross from the right wing bounced past Ryan in the box before Williams eventually knocked it home following a scramble in front of goal for a 1-0 advantage.
The Beavers pulled even just over seven minutes later though on Knauf's second marker of the year. The Pioneers were unable to clear a cross by Krauss and Knauf drilled a low shot from 15 yards back inside the near post to level the match in the 62nd minute.
Maltbie followed with the decisive goal just shy of 10 minutes later with a driving header at the back post off of Lawson's corner kick for her team-leading third game-winning tally of the fall.
Babson finished with a 14-4 edge in shots and attempted all five corner kicks in the game.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday as the Beavers host No. 8 MIT at 3:30 p.m., while Smith travels to Coast Guard at 4 p.m.
