No. 2 Field Hockey Downs Springfield for Eighth Straight Win, 5-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— Graduate student Sinead Walsh (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) and junior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) scored two goals apiece as No. 2 Babson College extended its winning streak to eight games with a 5-1 victory over Springfield College Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action at Stagg Field.

With the victory, the Beavers moved to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play while the Pride lost its second in a row and fell to 5-9 overall and 1-5 in the NEWMAC.

Graduate student Brianne McGrath (Newmarket, Ontario) also scored a goal for the Green and White in the win. Junior Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) picked up a pair of assists and Evans, junior Camille Marsh (Englewood, Colo.) and senior Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) added one assist each for the Beavers. Junior Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made a pair of saves to earn the win in goal.

First-year Hailey Gaydos (Newington, Conn.) scored the lone goal for the Pride in the third quarter to break up the shutout. Senior Remy Niland (Marshfield, Mass.) had a busy day in goal and finished with nine saves.

The Beavers scored one goal in each of the first three quarters before putting the game out of reach with a pair in the final frame. Babson opened the scoring in the ninth minute after Marsh pushed a pass ahead to Walsh on the left side and she spun and fired a shot past Niland inside the left post. The Green and White doubled the lead with four-plus minutes left in the half on a penalty corner when Sharrow sent a pass to Evans along the left end line, and she slipped behind Niland and buried a shot for a 2-0 lead at the intermission.

Babson pulled away with a third goal less than two minutes into the third quarter on another penalty corner. Sharrow sent a pass from the left side across traffic to McGrath on the right, and she ripped a shot through the goalie pads to make it 3-0. The Pride broke on to the scoreboard with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter on a fast break when Gaydos snuck through the Babson defense and got a shot past Furmanek inside the left post.

The Green and White tacked on a pair of fourth quarter goals less than two minutes apart to seal the win. Evans found Walsh along the left end line and she got a shot past Niland just inside the post for her second of the game in the 56th minute and after Marguerite's shot was deflected into the air, Evans bunted it past Niland for her second of the game in the 57th minute.

Babson finished with a 17-4 margin in total shots, including 15-3 attempts on goal. The Green and White took 12 of the game's 14 penalty corners.

The Beavers are on the road again on Wednesday with a 5 p.m. contest at crosstown rival Wellesley while Springfield plays its next three games on the road, beginning Tuesday at Wheaton at 7 p.m.
