Meet Preview: Cross Country at the Bowdoin Invitational

Cross Country at the Bowdoin Invitational

THE SETUP
• The Babson men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday on the Pickard Field Course, which will serve as a preview for the NCAA East Region championships in November.
• The women's 6k race is set to start at 10 a.m. and will be followed by the men's 8k meet at 11 a.m.

LAST TIME AT BOWDOIN
• Babson competed at the NCAA New England Championships at Bowdoin on November 11, 2018. The Beavers came in 19th with 577 points in the men's race and recorded 781 points to place 24th in the women's meet.
• Matthew Dynan '19 placed 55th in the men's race turning in a time of 26:15. Collin Regan '22 finished 71st running 26:35 and Samir Arora '20 recorded a career-best time of 27:27 to come in 130th.
• Emma Cavanagh '21 was the top finisher for the women turning an 89th-place performance with a personal-best time of 23:45. Stephanie Rodriguez '20 placed 138th after crossing the finish line with a time of 24:26, which was 25 seconds ahead of Hannah Piispanen who placed 170th.

SCOUTING THE BABSON WOMEN
• The Beavers are coming off a 27th place finish among 39 schools at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational last weekend.
• First-year Chloe Clifford was the top Babson finisher, placing 96th among 284 runners in a time of 19:54 for the 5K race. Classmate Alexandra Kirkpatrick was next in 128th in 20:15 followed by fellow first-year Ali Thomas in 142nd in 20:31.
• The rest of the Beaver scoring contingent included senior Nicole Johns, who finished in a time of 20:58, and first-year Avery Butt, who crossed the line in 23:09.

SCOUTING THE BABSON MEN
• Babson registered a 10th place finish among 36 Division II and III schools at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational last Saturday.
• Junior Anthony Rodriguez turned in a 14th place finish among 282 runners with a time of 25:14. Senior Ryan Wilson was the next Babson finisher, placing 48th in a time of 26:07, and sophomore Julian Ivarra was the third man across the line, finishing in 65th place in 26:29.
• Sophomore Zachary Walker came in 79h place overall in 26:44, followed by senior Yudai Yamakawa in 128th in 27:30.

BACK TO BACK
• The Beaver squads are running on consecutive weekends for the first time since the first two weeks of the 2019 season when they competed at Wheaton on August 30 and ran at the Fitchburg State Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational on September 7.

LOOKING BACK AT THE SEASON OPENER
• The Babson men took second place among five teams at the 8th Annual Wheaton & Babson Season Opener on September 2, while the Beavers took sixth place in the women's race.
• Rodriguez finished runner-up among 44 runners to pace the men's squad, covering the 5K course in 15 minutes, 44 seconds. Walker, Wilson and Ivarra crossed the line in the 7-8-9 spots, posting times of 16:43, 16:47, and 16:58, respectively.
• Babson had two first-years as top-20 finishers among the 63 competitors in the women's 3K race, as Kirkpatrick placed 15th with a time of 12:39 and Clifford came across the line 18th in 12:48. Johns, the only returning veteran for the Beavers, finished 25th in a time of 12:58. 

POLL POSITION
• The Beavers remain seventh in the USTFCCCA Men's East Region poll after their performance at UMass Dartmouth. NEWMAC rival MIT tops the regional poll and WPI is fifth.
• The Babson men were picked to finish third and the women 10th when the NEWMAC released its preseason coaches' polls earlier this month.

UP NEXT
• The Green and White will have three weeks off before racing again in the regular season finale at the Connecticut College Invitational on October 15 at Harkness Park in Waterford, Conn.
