Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.— Junior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) matched his career high with five goals and Babson College capitalized on a 7-0 first quarter to record a 16-8 victory over Emerson College Saturday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse match-up at MacDowell Field.
With the outcome, Babson improves to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the NEWMAC, while Emerson lost its second in a row and drops to 11-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Beavers also got three goals apiece from sophomore Connor Karsh (Glenview, Ill.) and first-year Colt Bordonaro (Portland, Ore.) and junior Matt Stucchi (Rexford, N.Y.) and sophomore Topher Bower (Chicago, Ill.) collected three assists each. Sophomore Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won 15 of 27 face-offs and picked up a career-high 14 ground balls, senior Drew Thomas (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) recorded four caused turnovers and two ground balls, and senior Mac Mowat (Bellevue, Wash.) made 10 saves in goal in the win.
Senior Skyler Celotto (Westport, Conn.) led the Lions with two goals and an assist while junior Nicholas Fulgione (North Andover, Mass.) scored twice and sophomore Birk Swan (Palos Verdes, Calif.) added a goal and an assist. First-year Tyler King (San Mateo, Calif.) won 7-of-13 face-off, junior Josh DeMattos (Queensbury, N.Y.) recorded three caused turnovers and four ground balls, and senior Malcolm McGrath (Ridgefield, Conn.) had a solid day in goal with 18 saves in the setback.
The Beavers dominated the first quarter, winning six of eight face-offs, outshooting the visitors 14-6, and jumping out to a 7-0 lead. Six different players found the back of the net, including two by Price and one each from Karsh, Bordonaro, Sunderland, first-year Emmett Martin (Milton, Mass.), and sophomore Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.).
The Lions scored the first two goals of the second frame, one each from senior Hunter Gervais (Johnston, R.I.) and Fulgione, but Babson answered with two by first-year Riley Shaw (Duluth, Ga.) and Price in the final four minutes to take a 9-2 lead into halftime. Emerson opened the third quarter with the first three goals, one each from Fulgione, first-year Alex Menendez (Naperville, Ill.) and graduate student Austin Franklin (New Bedford, Mass.) to pull to within 9-5, but the Beavers responded again with a pair by Karsh and Price to take an 11-5 margin into the final quarter.
For the third quarter in a row, Emerson scored the first two goals, this time both by Celotto, and for the third time, Babson matched the Lions with a pair of goals, this time by senior Peter Chisholm (Westford, Mass.) and Karsh. Swan added one more goal for the visitors but the Beavers closed out the win with the last three goals, two from Bordonaro and one from Price.
The Beavers ended up with a 58-29 advantage in shots and a 46-26 margin in ground balls. Babson won 16 of 28 face-offs and was good on 20-of-23 clears while holding Emerson to 21-of-27.
Babson plays its final regular season home game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against No. 8 Tufts. Emerson returns home for its final regular season home game next Saturday against MIT at 1 pm.
