Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Donal Mullane (Washington, D.C.) led all players with five goals and 11th-ranked Bowdoin College opened the fourth quarter with a three-goal run to hold off Babson College, 11-10, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at MacDowell Field.
Babson slips to 4-4 on the year with the loss while Bowdoin is off to its best start since 1989 at 8-0.
Sophomore Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.) scored three times, classmate Connor Karsh (Glencoe, Ill.) had two goals and graduate student Lee Sipes (Windham, N.H.) chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Sophomore Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) won 14-of-25 face-offs and scooped up eight ground balls, first-year Hayden Bean (Winchester, Mass.) had two caused turnovers and senior Austin O'Brien (Boston, Mass.) made 11 saves in his first career start.
Sophomore Oliver Bernstein (Brookline, Mass.) had two goals, senior AJ Bravo (Windermere, Fla.) led all players with three caused turnovers, and first-year Robert Hobbs (Wayne, Pa.) stopped a season-high 20 shots for the Polar Bears.
Tauss scored 3:44 into the contest and Karsh followed with back-to-back tallies to give the Green and White a 3-0 advantage with 9:15 left in the opening quarter. Mullane stopped the run momentarily less than a minute later, but Tauss scored at the 7:14 mark and junior Nick Solomon (Glencoe, Ill.) and Sipes scored late in the stanza to extend the Beavers' lead to 6-1.
Mullane scored three times in the second quarter to help Bowdoin pull within 6-5 at the half, Bernstein tied the game with his first goal at 8:59 of the third and senior Zach Chandler (Salisbury, Conn.) gave the Polar Bears their first lead at 7-6 less than 90 seconds later. Goals by junior Chi Chi Price (Hingham, Mass.) and first-year Colt Bordonaro (Portland, Ore.) helped the hosts pull even at 8-8 with 42 seconds to go in the third.
Mullane and first-year Patrick Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md.) scored 57 seconds apart to put Bowdoin back in front 10-8 less than two minutes into the fourth, and junior Zack Goorno (Concord, Mass.) gave the visitors their biggest lead of the game at 11-8 with 5:43 remaining. Junior Kyle Sanborn (Brookfield, Conn.) scored in transition with 3:16 left and Tauss notched his third goal of the game to cut the Babson deficit to one with 2:20 to play in the game.
The Beavers got the ball back with just over two minutes to go and Hobbs made his final save of the night to deny Sipes with 53 seconds left. Bowdoin was called for a penalty with 48 ticks remaining but Bravo forced a turnover with under 30 seconds to go and ran out the clock to withstand the upset bid.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Springfield at 12 p.m., while Bowdoin takes on Amherst at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• Babson, which allowed double-digit goals for the first time this season, held the Polar Bears to a season-low 11 goals which is more than six below their season average.
• The Beavers are 1-1 this season in games decided by a single goal.
• Babson was successful on 21-of-23 clearing opportunities and has converted 92.2 percent of its clears (95-for-103) over the last four games.
• Wednesday's loss snapped the Beavers' eight-game winning streak when leading at halftime.
