Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Alex Ratzan (Princeton, N.J.) broke a scoreless deadlock in the 107th minute as No. 4/2 Tufts University defeated No. 21 Babson College, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With the loss, Babson slips to 6-3-0 on the year, while Tutfs improves to 6-0-1 and extends its unbeaten streak going back to 2019 to 19 matches.
Senior Itai Rubin (Briafcliff, N.Y.) finished with five saves for the Beavers.
Senior Aidan Welsh (Arnold, Md.) picked up an assist for the Jumbos, who got three saves from first-year goalkeeper Erik Lauta (Aptos, Calif.).
Tufts finally broke through for the only goal of the match with 3:06 to play in the second overtime period. Rubin made a diving save at the left post on senior Calvin Aroh's (Glastonbury, Conn.) rising blast from the top of the box and Beavers' senior Liam Hanlon (Boxborough, Mass.) cleared Welsh's rebound attempt out of the goal mouth before Ratzan pounced on the rebound and put it away for his first goal of the season.
Babson's best scoring chance of the game less than three minutes into the game as Hanlon had his driving header off a corner by senior Robert Dunne (Medway, Mass.) denied by Lauta at the back post. Tufts sophomore Woovin Shin (San Jose, Calif.) missed just wide of the right post off a quick restart in the 79th minute and senior Biagio Paoletta (Fairfield, Conn.) hit the crossbar at the near post off a corner in the 83rd minute.
Beavers' senior Ross Shellow (Miami, Fla.) had his first attempt blocked and sent his rebound bid from the center of the box just wide in the 86th minute.
The Jumbos finished with 25-14 edge in shots, although eight of them were blocked by the Green and White.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Clark at 2:30 p.m., while Tufts takes on Bates at 3 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 9-10-0 all-time against the Jumbos.
• The loss to Tufts snapped Babson's eight-game home winning streak, which had started with a 2-0 victory over the Jumbos back in October 2019.
• Tuesday's match was the first decided in overtime this season for Babson, which is now 3-4-4 in overtime dating back to 2018.
