No. 13 Men's Ice Hockey Extends Unbeaten Run to 14 Games with 5-1 Win over Southern Maine

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Ryan McDougall (Milton, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and sophomore Matt Wiesner (Newport Beach, Calif.) added a goal and two assists to help 13th-ranked Babson College defeat the University of Southern Maine, 5-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon inside the Babson Skating Center.

Winners of five straight games and unbeaten over its last 14 outings, Babson improves to 14-3-2 overall and 9-2-1 in league play, while Southern Maine dips to 5-11-3 overall and 4-7-2 in the NEHC with its second consecutive loss.

McDougall also collected an assist to match his season high with three points, while sophomore Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) and Andrew Holland (Winchester, Mass.) added a goal apiece for the Beavers. Junior Patrick Flynn (Framingham, Mass.) recorded two assists and classmate Cooper Norton (Williston, Vt.) and sophomores Ryan Black (Pomfert, Conn.) and Cole Sanderson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) finished with one helper apiece. Sophomore goaltender Aidan Murphy (Walpole, Mass.) made 23 saves to improve to 9-0-1 on the season.

Sophomore Tyler Gardiner (Watertown, Mass.) scored once and seniors Ethan Bassile (Scarborough, Maine) and Cody Braga (Middleboro, Mass.) both chipped in with an assist for the Huskies, who had a pair of goals called back in the second period. Junior netminder Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas) made 23 saves over the first two periods, while senior Paul Léger (Blainville, Quebec) turned away 10 shots in the third.

Holland opened the scoring just 5:29 into the contest with a wrist shot from the slot for his ninth goal of the season. Egan, who had a goal disallowed less than five minutes into the game, doubled made it 2-0 at 11:41 of the first when he patiently finished off the rebound of McDougall's blast from the point for his team-leading 11th tally.

Southern Maine got on the board late in the first on Gardiner's third goal of the season. Murphy made a right pad save on Bassille's blast from the right point, but Gardiner drove the net and cleaned up the rebound to make it 2-1 at the 15:24 mark. The Beavers responded though, as McDougall scored his first of the day with a blast from the left point on the power play just 1:14 into the second to regain a two-goal edge.

Wiesner extended his points streak to five games when he gained the zone and then redirected Flynn's shot from the right wing past D'Aloisio for a 4-1 lead with less than five minutes to play in the second. Babson killed off a five-minute major that spanned the end of the second and beginning of the third periods to maintain its lead, and McDougall tacked on an empty net power play tally, his sixth of the season with 1:06 to go in the game for the final margin.

Babson returns to action next Friday when it hosts Castleton at 7 p.m., while Southern Maine travels to Colby on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
