THE SERIES
Babson and Wheaton will meet for the 34th time on Wednesday in a series that dates back to 1992. The Beavers are 24-9 all-time against the Lyons and have won nine of the last 10 meetings between the two teams going back to 2011.
LAST MEETING
Sophomore Owen Allen and junior Samuel Mishkind each scored three times and Babson College built a 13-goal halftime lead on its way to defeating Wheaton College, 19-9, on April 19, 2017 at MacDowell Field. Senior Austin Fabel and sophomore Thomas Jung both scored twice, while senior Jason Cox and junior Brendan Duffy each contributed a goal and an assist for the Beavers.
LAST WHEATON WIN
Charlie Willauer scored the go-ahead goal with 8:24 left in the fourth quarter and Matthew Hillman tacked on an insurance tally with 52 seconds left as the second-seeded Lyons topped third-seeded Babson, 7-5, to reach the Pilgrim League championship game on May 2, 2012 in Norton, Mass. Alex Patinkin '13 had three goals to lead the Beavers, who held a 2-0 lead after the first quarter.
SCOUTING THE LYONS
Wheaton (6-5, 0-3 NEWMAC) sophomore Matt Morgan recorded five goals and an assist, but the Lyons were edged by Clark, 12-10, on Saturday night at Granger Field. First-year Tyler Brown-Ortiz chipped in with three goals, senior Scott Whear logged a goal and two assists, and first-year goalkeeper Colin Walsh recorded 15 saves in the loss. Morgan (26-8-24) and Whear (16-14-30) have combined to record nine man-up goals, junior Josh Talanian (24-8-32) has scored in all but two games this season, and first-year Troy Sliney has picked up 55 ground balls while winning 93-of-170 face-offs. Senior Victor Moitinho has caused 13 turnovers, and sophomore goalkeeper Chandler Miller has an 8.67 goals against average with a .598 save percentage through 470 minutes.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
Babson (6-5, 3-0 NEWMAC) won its third-straight conference game after defeating Emerson, 19-4, on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field. Mishkind, Jung, sophomore Matthew MacCune and first-years Ade Akande and Will Messner each scored twice for the Beavers. Jung and first-year Mason O'Hanlon both recorded two assists, and senior Jordan Shapiro and sophomore Andrew Tymkiv combined to make 12 saves in the win. Mishkind (33-3-36) and junior Niall Dillon (13-9-22) have combined to score 13 man-up goals, while O'Hanlon (18-9-27) has produced six goals and four assists over the first three league games. First-year Jack Tague leads the team in both groundballs (32) and caused turnovers (15), and Aranalde has posted an 11.93 goals against average and a .446 save percentage in 10 contests this spring.
A GOAL FOR THE LONG POLES
Sophomore Thomas Calvert, who had three ground balls and two caused turnovers against Emerson, also scored the first goal of his career late in the fourth quarter. The tally was the first this season for any of Babson's long-stick midfielders or defensemen.
LYON TAMERS
Senior Axel Brown has scored 10 times and Fabel has produced six goals and six assists for 12 points in four matchups over the last three seasons against Wheaton.
DOMINATING WITH DEFENSE
The Beavers are holding NEWMAC foes to just 5.33 goals per game and have recorded 31 caused turnovers during their 3-0 start. Additionally, the goalkeeping quartet of Aranalde, Shapiro, Tymkiv and first-year Mac Mowat boasts a .660 save percentage in league play.
