Men's Ice Hockey Rallies for 2-2 Tie with New England College in NEHC Opener

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Matt Wiesner (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored 11:46 into the third period as Babson College and visiting New England College skated to a 2-2 overtime tie in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Friday night at the Babson Skating Center.

Babson and New England College are both 1-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference play.

First-year Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) finished with a goal and an assist, while junior Ryan McDougall (Milton, Mass.), sophomore Christian Faggas (Norwood, Mass.) and first-year Cole Sanderson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) all chipped in with one assist apiece for the Beavers. Junior goaltender Bryan Botcher (Mequon, Wis.) made 29 saves in his first start of the year.

Juniors Ryan Walsh (Hanover, Mass.) and William Riise (Charlottenlund, Denmark) both scored and senior Connor Fries (Barnstable, Mass.) registered two assists for the Pilgrims. Junior Anthony Pupplo (Shirley, N.Y.) stopped 35 shots in his first start of the season.

Following a scoreless first period, the Green and White jumped on top on Black's power play goal 8:26 into the second. Moments after Wiesner hit the crossbar, Black came streaking into the zone along the left wing and beat Pupplo with a wrister for his first career goal.

New England College wasted little time with its response as Walsh beat Botcher with a wrist shot from the top of the right face-off circle 45 seconds later to pull even. Riise followed with a one-timer from the slot off a face-off win by Fries to give the Pilgrims a 2-1 advantage at the 10:14 mark.

The Beavers pulled even with just over eight minutes to go in regulation as Wiesner stripped a Pilgrims' defenseman at the blue line and then finished off the breakaway chance with a wrist shot at the other end for his second goal of the year. Babson outshot the visitors 4-2 during the five-minute overtime period, but Pupplo kept helped New England College earn a point with back-to-back stops on sophomores Brendan Casey (Glastonbury, Conn.,) and Nick Rosa (Birmingham, Mich.) with under two minutes remaining.

The Beavers, which went 1-for-3 on the power play, finished with a 37-31 edge in shots.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson hosts Southern Maine, while New England College visits UMass Boston.
