Women's Lacrosse Suffers 11-0 Setback at No. 19 Amherst

AMHERST, Mass.—Senior Claire Cagnassola (Summit, N.J.) scored four goals as 19th-ranked Amherst College defeated visiting Babson College, 11-0, in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Gooding Field.

Babson, which has dropped two straight games, is now 3-4 on the year, while Amherst improves to 4-3 overall.

Junior Lyndsay Giroux (Westwood, Mass.) and first-year Olivia Remley (Ridgewood, N.J.) both finished with three ground balls, while junior Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) tied for game-high honors with three draw controls to lead the Beavers.

Senior Hanna Krueger (Charlotte, N.C.) had three goals and two assists to go along with three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers for Amherst, which got eight saves from junior Kyra Gardner (Darien, Conn.).

The Purple and White jumped out a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest, and got four first-half stops from Gardner to carry a 4-0 lead into the break. Krueger set up Cagnassola for a pair of goals early in the second half and then notched her second tally of the night with 18:00 left to extended the lead to 8-0.

Krueger and Cagnassola both struck for free-position goals over the final 11:01 and Gardner made her final save with 58 seconds to play to preserve the shutout.

First-year Olivia Phelan (Wilton, Conn.) and senior Stevie Burger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) combined to make one save for the Beavers.

The Green and White, which hit the post once in each half, converted all 11 of its clearing opportunities and forced the hosts to commit 30 turnovers.

Amherst finished with the edge in shots (18-11), ground balls (26-21) and draw controls (9-4).

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Mount Holyoke at 1 p.m., while Amherst visits Middlebury on 2 p.m.

GAME NOTES
•    The Beavers are now 1-4 all-time against Amherst.
•    Babson, which had previously scored just one goal against Wellesley in 1990 and Skidmore in 2003, was shut out for the first time.
•    The Beavers have caused 10 or more turnovers in five of seven games this spring.
