Women's Lacrosse Suffers 12-7 Loss at Bates

Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine—Sophomore Annie Arthur (West Windsor, Vt.) scored a career-high three goals, but it wasn't enough as Bates College remained unbeaten with a 12-7 victory over visiting Babson College in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Garcelon Field.

Babson is now 1-1 on the year, while Bates moves to 4-0 for the first time since 2003.

Junior Katie McKenna (Sandwich, Mass.) finished with a goal and an assist, while sophomore Charlotte O'Halloran (Middletown, R.I.) led all players with two assists and also scooped up three ground balls for the Beavers. Junior Delaney Carroll (Acton, Mass.) and sophomore Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) both had three draw controls, and first-year Lauren Drakeley (Woodbury, Conn.) contributed three ground balls and a game-high three caused turnovers in the loss.

Senior Moriah Greenstein (Glenmont, N.Y.) led all players with four goals for the Bobcats.

McKenna and Arthur scored back-to-back goals to give the Green and White a 3-1 lead just under eight minutes into the contest before Bates used an 8-1 run to seize control of the game. The Bobcats took a 4-3 lead at the 16:08 mark on a tally by first-year Sydney Howard (Ashland, Mass.), and then followed a goal by Beavers' sophomore Lyndsay Giroux (Westwood, Mass.) with four straight markers to build an 8-4 advantage at the break.

Greenstein pushed the hosts' lead to 9-4 less than two minutes into the second half, but Arthur responded with back-to-back tallies to pull Babson within 9-6 at the 20:57 mark. Greenstein and Beavers' sophomore Jacki Merrigan (Canton, Mass.) traded goals to keep the margin at three with a little over 13 minutes remaining before Bates junior Sydney Cowles (Wayne, Pa.) tacked on a pair of insurance goals inside the last eight minutes for the final margin.

Junior goalie Stevie Burger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) finished with five saves for Babson, while senior Hannah Jeffrey (Greenwich, Conn.) stopped seven shots for the Bobcats.

Bates finished with a 28-22 edge in shots and a 12-9 advantage in draw controls.

The Beavers, who went 12-of-14 on clear opportunities, were able to convert just one of seven free-position shots.

Babson returns to action on Monday when it takes on Ithaca at 12 p.m. in Clermont, Fla., while Bates will host Amherst on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
