Five-Goal Run Helps Women's Lacrosse Edge Goucher, 10-8

Box Score

CLERMONT, Fla.—Sophomore Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) scored twice and led all players with five draw controls as Babson College defeated Goucher College, 10-8, in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday night at the National Training Center Athletic Complex.

With the win, Babson is now 2-2 on the year, while Goucher slips to 2-4 overall.

Juniors Kiley Fischer (Marblehead, Mass.) and Francesca Giovanucci (Easton, Mass.) both scored a pair of goals, while sophomore Charlotte O'Halloran (Middletown, R.I.) led all players with two assists for the Beavers. Junior Delaney Carroll (Acton, Mass.) scooped up a team-high four ground balls and classmate Christine Gill (Hingham, Mass.) tied for game-high honors with two caused turnovers.

Sophomores Sophie Smith (Lawrenceville, N.J.) and Jojo Franklin (Denver, Colo.) each scored three goals to lead the Gophers. Junior Stefi Perry (Houston, Texas) led the team with four ground balls and two caused turnovers in the loss.

With the contest deadlocked at 2-2 late in the first half, the Green and White embarked on a five-goal run to break the game open. Senior Kayla Farina (Newton, Mass.) and Harrigan scored just 40 seconds apart to build a 4-2 edge with 4:29 to go in the stanza,  and junior Emily Bresnahan (Wenham, Mass.) notched her only game just 11 seconds from halftime to give Babson a 5-2 lead at the break.

Giovanucci and junior Katie McKenna (Sandwich, Mass.) opened the second half with back-to-back tallies, pushing the Beavers' advantage to 7-2 with 25:31 remaining. The Gophers wouldn't go quietly though, as Smith and Franklin each scored twice over the next four minutes to cut their deficit to 8-6 with 21:37 to go.

Giovanucci pushed the lead back to 9-6 less than a minute later, and Babson dominated the ball over the final 20 minutes while holding Goucher to just one shot on goal. Perry got the Gophers back within 9-7 at the 14:14 mark, but the Green and White maintained possession for much of the next six minutes before Fischer converted a feed from McKenna to make it a three-goal game with 8:05 left.

Junior goalie Stevie Burger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) stopped four shots for Babson, while sophomore Bridget Den Boer (Sparta, N.J.) made 16 saves for Goucher.

The Beavers finished with a 37-15 edge in shots, a 14-6 advantage in ground balls and scooped up 17 ground balls on the night. They also were a season-best 12-of-13 on clear opportunities.

Both teams return to action on Thursday at 11 a.m. as Babson takes on McDaniel, while Goucher faces MCLA.
