Saint Anselm Edges No. 4/7 Men's Ice Hockey, 1-0

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H.—Junior Brendon Kerrigan (Boston, Mass.) scored on the power play at 12:50 of the first period and sophomore Shane Joyce (Pembroke, Mass.) made it stand up with 25 saves as Saint Anselm College upset No. 4 USCHO.com/No. 7 D3hockey.com Babson College, 1-0, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Arena.

Babson, which is winless in three straight games, suffered its first conference loss to drop to 10-3-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the league, while Saint Anselm is now 7-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the NEHC.

Senior goaltender Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) made 19 saves for the Beavers, who were blanked for the first time in 22 games going back to last season.

Seniors Mark Meads (Middleton, Mass.) and Bryan Sullivan (Burlington, Mass.) picked up assists on Kerrigan's tally for the Hawks. The shutout was the first of the season and just the second of Joyce's career.

Babson outshot Saint Anselm 11-9 in the opening period and the squads combined for just 10 shots on goal in the second period. The Beavers went on the power play with 28 seconds left in the middle frame, but were able to generate just two shots by senior Jared Wiedemann (Pembroke, Mass.), with one going wide and one being blocked.

The Green and White went on the power play again at 14:29 of the third period following a cross-checking penalty on Saint Anselm. Joyce came up with a save on junior Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio) during the power play and then denied him again with just over two minutes remaining to keep the margin at one. The Beavers pulled Murray with 2:20 left, but were unable to find an equalizer as first-year Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.) had a shot blocked and sophomore Jake Donahue's (Groveland, Mass.) blast from the top of the right circle was kicked away by Joyce in the closing seconds.

Babson returns to action on Friday when it travels to nationally-ranked UMass-Boston at 7 p.m. to begin a home-and-home weekend series, while Saint Anselm visits Connecticut College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
