No. 4/7 Men's Ice Hockey Rallies For 2-2 OT Tie at New England College

Box Score

HENNIKER, N.H.—Sophomore Charlie Ackerman (Bradenton, Fla.) scored the game-tying goal at 12:44 of the third period as No. 4 USCHO.com/No. 7 D3hockey.com Babson College skated to a 2-2 overtime at New England College in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Friday night at Lee Clement Arena.

Babson, which extended its unbeaten streak to nine games against the Pilgrims, is now 10-2-2 overall and 6-0-1 in league play, while New England College moves to 8-4-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the NEHC.

Senior Mike Vollmin (Wilmington, N.C.) finished with a goal and an assist, while juniors Tim Searles (Chesapeake, Va.) and Bill Seligman (Toronto, Ontario) both finished with an assist for the Beavers.

First-year Andreas Zollner (Varnamo, Sweden) and senior Kyle Manlow (Murrieta, Calif.) both scored once for the Pilgrims, who got assists from fellow senior Cheyne Matheson (Wheatley, Ontario) and first-year Mike Whitehair (Victor, N.Y.).

New England College took a 1-0 lead 10:40 into the first period as Zollner fired a shot over the left shoulder of Babson senior netminder Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) for his second goal of the year. The Green and White responded less than three minutes later though, as Vollmin notched his second tally of the year with a blast from the blue line at the 13:28 mark.

The Pilgrims killed off a pair of penalties early in the second period and then had a 5-on-3 power play midway through the stanza after the Beavers were whistled for back-to-back penalties just 22 seconds apart. Murray made three saves and the Babson defense blocked two other shots to keep the game deadlocked.

The Beavers went on the power play at 9:40 of the third period following a tripping penalty on New England College, but the Pilgrims scored a shorthanded goal just 11 seconds after going a man down as Manlow cleaned up the rebound of a shot by Matheson to grab a 2-1 lead. Ackerman scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season, converting a feed from Vollmin, just 2:53 later to make it 2-2 with a little over seven minutes to go.

Murray made three late saves while his counterpart, New England College junior Brett Kilar (Coto de Caza, Calif.), stopped four shots over the final minutes of regulation and overtime. Beavers' sophomore Jake Donahue (Groveland, Mass.) also hit the post late in regulation with the teams playing 4-on-4.

Murray finished with 26 saves for the Green and White, while Kilar stopped 43 shots for the Pilgrims.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson visits Saint Anselm, while New England College hosts UMass-Boston.
