BOSTON—First-year Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.) scored twice and junior Tim Searles (Chesapeake, Va.) notched the go-ahead goal at 4:13 of the third period as No. 7 USCHO.com/No. 9 D3hockey.com Babson College edged No. 5 USCHO.com/No. 8 D3hockey.com University of Massachusetts-Boston, 3-2, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Friday night at the Beacons Ice Arena.

With the win, Babson is now 11-3-2 overall and 7-1-1 in conference play, while UMass-Boston drops to 12-3-1 and 8-1-0 in the NEHC.

Senior Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) stopped 36 shots to earn his 10th victory of the season for the Beavers. Sophomores Jake Donahue (Groveland, Mass.), Charlie Ackerman (Bradenton, Fla.), Joe DePietto (Westbury, N.Y.), Rob Devaney (Reading, Mass.) and Paul Wagner (Walpole, Mass.) all finished with one assist apiece in the win.

Senior Frankie DeAugustine (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) each scored once for the Beacons, who got 37 saves from senior netminder Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.).

Munichiello gave the Green and White a 1-0 lead at 14:23 of the first period when he poked home a loose puck at the top of the crease for his fifth goal of the season. He then extended the lead to 2-0 with a power play tally at 5:49 of the second period after the Beavers killed off back-to-back penalties, including 42 seconds of a 5-on-3 UMass-Boston power play early in the stanza.

Babson had a pair of power play chances midway through the second, but was unable to stretch its lead further. The Beacons then sliced their deficit in half as Bishop scored his sixth goal of the year to get within 2-1 at the 13:07 mark.

The Green and White was whistled for a tripping penalty with 32 seconds left in the second and UMass-Boston took advantage early in the third period as DeAugustine notched his team-leading 11th tally of the year to make it 2-2 less than a minute after the intermission. Searles put the Beavers back in front just a little over three minutes later though, as he took a feed from Devaney and beat Faust with a wrister for his first game-winning goal of the year.

Murray made 14 of his 36 saves in the third period and the Beacons twice had shots ring off the pipe over the final 11-plus minutes. Babson also blocked three shots and killed off a power play midway through the frame to preserve the lead.

The teams will play the back end of their weekend home-and-home series at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the Babson Skating Center.
