Women's Lacrosse Pulls Away From Coast Guard, 15-4

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Sophomore Francesca Giovanucci (Easton, Mass.) scored a career-high four goals and visiting Babson College used a 10-goal second-half run to defeat the Coast Guard Academy, 15-4, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night.

With its second consecutive win, Babson is now 5-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while Coast Guard drops to 3-10 overall and 0-7 in the NEWMAC.

Senior Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass.) had two goals and one assist to go along with a game-high seven ground balls, while first-year Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) also scored twice, dished out one assist and led all players with six draw controls for the Beavers. Classmate Charlotte O'Halloran (Middletown, R.I.) contributed two goals and one assist, and junior Kayla Farina (Newton, Mass.) added one goal, two assists, five draw controls and a game-high three caused turnovers.

Sophomore Niki Kruger (Coronado, Calif.) led the Bears with two goals, two ground balls and two draw controls. Junior Lucy Daghir (Havre de Grace, Md.) scored once and contributed an assist, while senior Ruby Sargent (Huntingtown, Md.) added a goal.

Secrist opened the scoring at the 27:08 mark, but Coast Guard scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead on Kruger's strike with 18:56 left in the half. Tallies by Farina and Harrigan put Babson back in front 3-2 with 8:54 left in the stanza, but Daghir buried a free-position shot to tie the game with 5:22 to go before halftime.

First-year Annie Arthur (West Windsor, Vt.) and Harrigan scored two minutes apart to give the Beavers a 5-3 advantage, but Kruger converted a feed from Daghir with 34 seconds to go in the first half to pull the Bears within a goal at the break.

The Green and White dominated the second half, winning nine of 11 draw controls, and forcing Coast Guard into 16 turnovers to pull away. Giovanucci, sophomore Kate Montague (Manchester, Vt.) and O'Halloran all scored early in the second half to give Babson an 8-4 lead with 25:28 to play. Bears' first-year goalkeeper Angel Fay (Culver, Ind.) made four saves over the next nine minutes to stay within striking distance, but the Beavers finally broke through for four goals in the span of 3:55.

Giovannuci finished a free-position chance and sophomore Christine Gill (Hingham, Mass.) followed with her sixth goal of the year to make it 10-4 with 15:10 to go. Secrist won the ensuing draw control and scored 15 seconds later for a seven-goal margin, and Farina later grabbed her own rebound and fed Giovanucci to give the Green and White a 12-4 edge with 12:26 remaining.

Babson, which held a 23-2 edge in second-half shots, added three markers over the final 10:56 for the final margin.

Sophomore goalkeeper Stevie Burger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) finished with one save, while Fay stopped 14 shots for Coast Guard.

The Beavers, which was a perfect 14-for-14 on clear opportunities, held a 16-5 edge in draw controls and ended with a 22-15 advantage in ground balls.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to nationally-ranked Springfield at 1 p.m., while Coast Guard visits Smith at 4 p.m.
