Box Score BOSTON—Senior Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass.) finished with six goals and two assists, while first-year Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) set new career highs with three goals and nine draw controls as visiting Babson College raced past Emerson College, 15-8, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Rotch Field.
With its second straight win, Babson is now 3-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Emerson drops to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the NEWMAC.
Secrist notched six of the Beavers' first 11 goals, while Harrigan added three groundballs and three caused turnovers in the victory. Sophomore Kiley Fischer (Marblehead, Mass.) added two goals and two groundballs, classmate Francesca Giovanucci (Easton, Mass.) scored once and collected three draw controls, and fellow sophomore Delaney Carroll (Acton, Mass.) caused a pair of turnovers.
Sophomore Merdith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J.) finished with four goals, three groundballs and two caused turnovers to lead the Lions. Junior Tayllar Righini (Salem, N.H.) added three goals to go along with four draw controls, while classmate Kate Lemire (Scituate, Mass.) chipped in with two assists.
Righini gave Emerson a 1-0 just 2:16 into the contest, but the Green and White responded with six straight markers over the next 19 minutes to take control of the game. Secrist tied it 20 seconds later, and then followed a tally by junior Kayla Farina (Newton, Mass.) with back-to-back goals just 46 seconds apart to put Babson in front 4-1 with 12:42 to go in the first half.
Harrigan followed with consecutive goals to make it 6-1 at the 9:07 mark, but Emerson responded with two quick tallies to cut its deficit to 6-3 with 2:49 to go in the period. Junior McKenzie Tucci (Winchester, Mass.) converted a feed from Secrist 44 seconds later, and Harrigan notched her third goal of the stanza with 1:46 left to give the Beavers an 8-3 halftime edge.
Secrist scored twice in the opening 1:56 of the second half to push the Babson lead to seven. Weber stopped the run momentarily with her second goal of the night at 26:41, but Secrist and Fischer struck for back-to-back free-position tallies to give the Beavers their biggest lead of the night at 12-4 with 23:05 to go in the game.
The Lions crept back into the game with a three-goal run, capped by Weber's third goal of the night to make it 12-7 with 13:53 remaining, but the visitors responded with three of the game's final four goals. First-year Annie Arthur (West Windsor, Vt.) scored following an Emerson turnover though, and Giovanucci and Fischer added consecutive markers to put the Green and White back in front 15-8 with 5:56 to go.
Sophomore Stevie Burger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) stopped nine shots for Babson, while junior Victoria Kanaris (Haworth, N.J.) and first-year Kristina Modica (East Moriches, N.Y.) combined to make 14 saves for Emerson.
The Beavers finished with a 14-10 edge in draw controls and went 15-for-17 on clear chances.
The Lions held a slim 22-20 edge in ground balls, but committed 18 turnovers and were just 1-of-4 on free-position shots.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Wheaton at 1 p.m., while Emerson visits Coast Guard at 12 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The Beavers have outscored their opponents 19-4 in the opening half of its first two NEWMAC games…Babson is 2-0 this season and has won five consecutive games when leading at halftime going back to last season…the Beavers are 7-3 when scoring at least 10 goals over the last two seasons…with six goals and two assists, Secrist is now 10th on the program's all-time list in both career goals (149) and career points (195)…Burger's nine saves are her most since stopping 16 shots against Skidmore on March 7.
