Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Moriah Greenstein (Glenmont, N.Y.) scored four times and visiting Bates College used a seven-goal run that spanned both halves en route to an 11-8 victory over Babson College in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at MacDowell Field.
With the win, Bates is now 4-2 on the year, while Babson drops to 1-3 overall.
Senior Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) had three goals and an assist, and first-year Teal Otley (Cumberland, Maine) scored once an added an assist for the Bobcats, who got goals from six different players. Getsinger finished with a game-high six draw controls, while junior Emma Brinkman (Rye, N.Y.) and classmate Hannah Jeffrey (Greenwich, Conn.) each scooped up three groundballs.
Senior Rachel Secrist (Westford, Mass.) scored twice to go along with one assist, two draw controls and two groundballs to lead the Beavers. Sophomore Francesca Giovanucci (Easton, Mass.) had two goals, while junior McKenzie Tucci (Winchester, Mass.) and sophomore Kiley Fischer (Marblehead, Mass.) both had a goal and an assist. Classmate Delaney Carroll (Acton, Mass.) finished with team highs of four groundballs and three caused turnovers.
After falling behind 2-0, the Green and White scored four consecutive goals in the span of 4:29 to build a two-goal lead. Secrist notched the Beavers first goal at the 26:11 mark, and then followed with her second of the game after setting up Tucci to make it 4-2 with 21:42 to go in the opening stanza.
Bates responded though, scoring the final four markers of the first half. Getsinger scored her second of the game just past the midway point of the period, and firs-tyear Annie Duke (Englewood, Colo.) tied the game at 4-4 with her seventh goal of the year with 10:08 to go in the stanza. Greenstein then scored back-to-back goals, taking advantage of a Babson turnover to grab a 5-4 lead, and then converting a feed from sophomore Kaileigh Maguire (Sudbury, Mass.) following a free position chance late in the half to make it 6-4 at the break.
Otley set up Getsinger's third goal, and then scored on a free-position shot just 1:07 into the second half to push the Bates lead to four. Brinkman followed it up with her 12th goal of the season to give the Bobcats their biggest lead of the game at 9-4 with 24:12 to go.
Giovanucci and Tucci countered with back-to-back scores to cut Bates lead to 9-6 with 18:02 to play. The Beavers had opportunities to draw closer, but Jeffrey made three big saves, the last of which set up a goal by Greenstein in transition to make it a four-goal margin with 9:45 remaining.
Tallies by Fischer and sophomore Katie McKenna (Sandwich, Mass.) pulled Babson to within three twice in the final eight minutes, but Jeffrey came up with a pair of late saves on free-position shots to preserve the Bates win.
Jeffrey finished with a season-high 17 saves for the Bobcats while holding Babson to just one goal on five free-position shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Stevie Burger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) made six stops for the Green and White.
The Bobcats held a 13-8 edge in draw controls and were 14-of-18 on clear opportunities, while the Beavers finished with a 15-12 advantage in groundballs and were successful on 17-of-19 clear attempts.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. as Babson travels to Rensselaer, while Bates hosts Trinity.
GAME NOTES: Babson is 6-15 all-time against Bates…the Beavers' 29 total shots and 25 shots on goal were both season highs…Babson also caused a season-high nine turnovers…the Beavers have now converted 79.3 percent of their clear chances through four games.
